Class Verse: Proverbs 16:9 (All Scripture texts: NIV) Dear Faculty and Board, all students, parents, relatives and especially you, the graduating Class of 2010. You've made your plans. I've seen a lot of them, in the service today. Some of you are going to be veterinarians, some of you are going to work in police enforcement, some of you are going to teach math. You've made your plans; you're ready to hit the road, but before you head out the door this morning, God wants you to consider something. The words of our text for this morning are: "IN HIS HEART A MAN PLANS HIS COURSE, BUT THE LORD DETERMINES HIS STEPS." (Proverbs 16:9) You see, you may make your plans, but in the end ... the LORD will determine how you go. James, the brother of our Lord mentions one aspect of this when he says: NOW LISTEN, YOU WHO SAY, "'TODAY OR TOMORROW WE WILL GO TO THIS OR THAT CITY, SPEND A YEAR THERE, CARRY ON BUSINESS AND MAKE MONEY.'" "WHAT IS YOUR LIFE?" "YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN TOMORROW." "YOUR LIFE IS A MIST THAT APPEARS FOR A LITTLE WHILE AND THEN VANISHES." JAMES, chapter 4, verses 13-14 (NIV) Moses also talks about how transitory our life is. He says in Psalm 90 that God sweeps men away in the sleep of death. And he says how great is the power of Your anger. Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due You! And then he prays: "TEACH US TO NUMBER OUR DAYS ARIGHT, THAT WE MAY GAIN A HEART OF WISDOM." (verse 12) When we were children, we talked and thought and reasoned like children, but now you are men and women in Christ. It's time for us to put away childish thinking. We have the mind of Christ. The mind of Christ forgives ... as Christ has forgiven us and prays for our enemies. The mind of Christ gives glory to God ... in all that we say, think and do. The mind of Christ is willing to do the will of our Father in heaven even when it goes against our own desires or thoughts. The mind of Christ is willing to thank God in all situations ... even if we come down with leukemia, or some other dreadful disease. The mind of Christ takes God's Word: "BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD." Takes that to heart and realizes that God is in control, even when the whole world seems spinning out of control. The mind of Christ trusts in God working all things for our good. That He knows what is best for us. And this is the way Jesus talked as Jesus prepared to die for our sins. In the Garden of Gethsemane, as Jesus predicted, all the disciples deserted Him. His enemies were closing in to arrest Him and kill Him. He asked the Father to direct His steps. He said: "YOUR WILL, NOT MINE BE DONE." It was the Father's will to crush the Son, to punish Him for OUR sins. It was His will to put the sinless Son of God, to death. There may be some of you out there who think that the way to get to heaven is to balance your good and your bad things. If you have more good than bad, then maybe God will let you into heaven. I'm here to tell you the Bible says that is the way to eternal death. There is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to death. God tells us in His Word: The wages of sin IS death ... eternal death. And you and I could never earn that. If you break one Law, James says, you're guilty of the whole Law. And you can't compare yourself to others because that doesn't help as well. We're all sinners. God put His sinless Son to death ... because that was the only way our sins could be paid. HE WAS DELIVERED OVER TO DEATH FOR OUR SINS. HE WAS RAISED TO LIFE FOR OUR JUSTIFICATION! (Romans 4:25) Because He died we are forgiven. Because He rose to live forever we stand before God as His sinless sons and daughters, righteous in His sight. My friends, our text holds an amazing truth before us today. It says that it is "The LORD" who directs our steps. This word is a Tetragrammaton, that special word that's used for God's name. You see, we like sheep all go astray. We make foolish plans ... plans contrary to God's will. But the LORD in His great love reveals Himself to us. When Moses asked His name, He said: (Exodus 34:6-7) I am "THE LORD, THE LORD, THE COMPASSIONATE AND GRACIOUS GOD, SLOW TO ANGER, ABOUNDING IN LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS, MAINTAINING LOVE TO THOUSANDS, AND FORGIVING WICKEDNESS, REBELLION AND SIN. YET HE DOES NOT LEAVE THE GUILTY UNPUNISHED; HE PUNISHES THE CHILDREN AND THEIR CHILDREN FOR THE SIN OF THE FATHERS TO THE THIRD AND FOURTH GENERATION." We see that the LORD drove this stubborn, rebellious people ... the people He had chosen for a covenant relationship. And He drove them into exile for 70 years. They lost out on physical blessings of the land, of water, and protection from God's enemies. But in His Covenant love, our faithful God, the LORD, brought His people back to the land of Israel, that promised land that He had promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And God fulfilled His promise because the Savior was to be born in Bethleham, the land of Judah, in the nation of Israel. In His great love, our Covenant God, has also included you, into His family. Through baptism, God has made us one of His own. When we were dead in our sins and in the uncircumcism of our sinful nature, God made us alive in Christ. And He buried us in baptism and raised us up with Him through faith in His Son. And it says: He forgave us ALL our sins. "IN HIS HEART A MAN PLANS HIS COURSE, BUT THE LORD DETERMINES HIS STEPS." (Proverbs 16:9) What a comfort that is ... to all of us! And especially to you graduates as you step into a new stage of your life. Our God, our faithful God of the Covenant, has promised that He will be with you to the end of the age ... through every step of your life. I want to see a raise of hands. How many of you saw Three Hundred? ... Or Avatar? Those Greek soldiers who cut through the Persians unscathed ... Those Avatar beings ... those strange people with the tails of blue, who could fall 10,000 feet and not be hurt! God says He will be with us. He says: "A THOUSAND MAY FALL AT YOUR SIDE, TEN THOUSAND AT YOUR RIGHT HAND, BUT IT WILL NOT COME NEAR YOU. YOU WILL ONLY OBSERVE WITH YOUR EYES AND SEE THE PUNISHMENT OF THE WICKED. IF YOU MAKE THE MOST HIGH YOUR DWELLING ... EVEN THE LORD, WHO IS MY REFUGE -- THEN NO HARM WILL BEFALL YOU, NO DISASTER WILL COME NEAR YOUR TENT. FOR HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU, TO GUARD YOU IN ALL YOUR WAYS." (Psalm 91:7-11) Does this mean we will never get hurt in our struggle against Satan, the world and our sinful flesh? No! We know that that spiritual struggle is tough. Even Jesus, as He struggled against sin, wept and cried aloud to God the Father. But we have confidence. The same confidence that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego had as they stood before King Nebuchadnezzar and said: We will not bow down to your idols, even if you throw us into the fire. They said: If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, our God we serve is able to save us and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. But we want you to know that even if He does not save us, we will NOT worship your gods. We will NOT bow down to idol of gold you have set up. How can they be so strong? How can they have such confidence? Because they had the confdience that you and I have, along with the Apostle Paul: "WHO SHALL SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF CHRIST? SHALL TROUBLE OR HARDSHIP OR PERSECUTION OR FAMINE OR NAKEDNESS OR DANGER OR SWORD? AS IT IS WRITTEN: 'FOR YOUR SAKE WE FACE DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE ARE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED. NO, IN ALL THESE THINGS WE ARE MORE THAN CONQUERORS THROUGH HIM WHO LOVED US. FOR I AM CONVINCED THAT NEITHER DEATH NOR LIFE, NEITHER ANGELS NOR DEMONS, NEITHER THE PRESENT NOR THE FUTURE, NOR ANY POWERS, NEITHER HEIGHT NOR DEPTH, NOR ANYTHING ELSE IN ALL CREATION, WILL BE ABLE TO SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF GOD THAT IS IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD." (Romans 8:35-39) "IN HIS HEART A MAN PLANS HIS COURSE, BUT THE LORD DETERMINES HIS STEPS." (Proverbs 16:9) God's Word today focuses a radar beam right on Satan's lie that YOU can take control of your life. That you can plot out your own course. That you can be the captain of your soul. God says, that HE ... is in control of our life. Satan's lie will lead us down to eternal death. But God shatters that lie and He shows us in His Word, that He is in control. Think back to the Tower of Babel. When God commanded mankind to spread out over the whole face of the earth, and mankind in stubborn rebellion said: Let's build an idol. Let's build a tower so we can stay united here in this place. And God simply confused the languages. And so accomplished His Holy Will. And in the time of Joseph ... his brothers sold him into slavery ... a virtual death sentence. And God rose him up second to Pharoah. Joseph said: "YOU INTENDED TO HARM ME, BUT GOD WORKED IT FOR GOOD TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT IS NOW BEING DONE, THE SAVING OF MANY LIVES." (Genesis 50:20) Not only did God preserve His faithful people, but He also kept the promised line of the Savior. Many times, we think that God has lost control. But we know that nothing in our life happens by chance. God is always working all things for the good. Because we are His beloved sons and daughters ... the ones that the LORD Himself has included into His Covenant. We ARE the new spiritual Israel, which will inherit ...the new heaven ... the new earth ... the Home of Righteousness. As Paul wrote: "FROM ONE MAN HE MADE EVERY NATION OF MEN, THAT THEY SHOULD INHABIT THE WHOLE EARTH; AND HE DETERMINED THE TIMES SET FOR THEM AND THE EXACT PLACES WHERE THEY SHOULD LIVE. GOD DID THIS SO THAT MEN WOULD SEEK HIM AND PERHAPS REACH OUT OUT FOR HIM AND FIND HIM, THOUGH HE IS NOT FAR FROM EACH OF US." (Acts 17:26-27) What a privilege you have had as the LORD directed you and determined your time and place that you would come to CLHS, and you would sit at the feet of teachers who know the LORD, and would teach you about the free gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus. God gathered you together for that purpose. And now He's scattering you forth as new seeds in the ground for another purpose. You see, God wants you to go and bear fruit. He says He wants you to let your deeds shine before men so that they may see them and glorify the Father in heaven. We don't have to wonder why God has created us. We know that. In Isaiah 43:7, it says: These are the people I've formed for My glory! And in verse 21 He goes on and says: These are the people I formed for Myself, that they may declare My praise. Go forth then, Graduates, and live your lives in such a way that even though they may accuse you of doing wrong, the unbelievers around you will glorify God in the Day of His coming. We live in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars as you hold on to the Word of Life ... and as you share it with all those around you. May the LORD bless you and keep you. May the LORD, the faithful Covenant God, be gracious to you. May the LORD look upon you with favor and give you His peace. Amen.
