Rescue groups supporters and
refugees held a demonstration
in central Athens the highlight
what they call the increasing
criminalization of sea rescues
and the anti-migration policies
of some in E.U countries.
Some of the protesters laid down
in front of banners that read:
“would you save us?”
to bring attention to the problem
of the thousands of people who die
each year trying to reach Europe.
The predominant color was orange,
a reference to the lifejackets
usually worn by migrants picked up
in the Mediterranean.
The rally in Athens was just one
event in an series across Europe,
organized by the International
movement see Brooker
that translates as sea bridge.
The movement is calling this
establishment of safe routes
for refugees, save harbours and end
to the criminalization
of sea rescues and huge main
conditions for refugees
upon arrival.
Some, also call for the release
of prominent Syrian refugees
Sarah Mardini and
the Irish volunteer Sean Binder
currently in Greek custody for
allgedly facilitating refugees
and migrants into Greece.
