Science in Seconds - Race

Science in Seconds Know Everything RANTS - Race Torah Kachur: Black. White. Asian. African. Indian. Vampire. These are what most people would call races. Biologists are not most people. Race is not a biological classification. It is a social construct where people are judged based on the color of their skin instead of their biology. The biology says that humans are humans. We all share similar DNA. Changes in DNA sequence accounts for skin color and eye shape, traits often used to judge race. But those are miniscule differences between individuals that our society has placed massive emphasis on. People vary at the genetic level by about 0.1%. So it's approximately 0.007% variation within a classified race and 0.008% variation between these races. In other words, there's almost no statistical difference in DNA sequence between races. And there's more difference between people of African ancestry than between someone of African and European descent. This is partially because humans evolved in Africa, so African populations are much older and have had more time to accumulate differences. There's no genetic "African" race just as there's no "Asian" race, but there are local populations that tend to interbreed and look alike. Race is powerful. Certainly race can be used as an indicator of ancestry, culture, and heritage, but it does not imply a biological or fundamental difference between humans. We, the entire human race, exist on a biological continuum determined by our genes. So the next time you identify a racial group, know that it has no grounds in biology.
