The 1920s was a decade full of dramatic, social, cultural, economical and political changes. The 20s gave us jazz, movies, radio, gangsters, and the beginning of the worst economic crisis the U.S has ever seen. The Republican Party also dominated politics during the 20s in the United States--with the presidents being conservative Republicans. Productivity also rose dramatically because industry's began adopting Henry Ford's assembly line techniques. New industries like aviation, chemicals, and electronics grew to provide Americans with products and jobs. The Ford Model T cost just $260 in 1924. By 1929, half of all American families owned their own car. By the end of this decade, America produced 85% of the world's cars and 40% of overall manufactured goods. The AMerican film industry moves to Hollywood before WWI. By 1925, Hollywood had become the greatest in the world. More and more people had money to see these Hollywood movies thanks to consumer debt because of the widespread use of credit and layaway plans There was also migrations of African Americans from the south to cities in the north. The black population of major northern cities grew by large percentages. Including New York by 66%, Chicago 148%, Philadelphia by 500%, and Detroit by 611% Harlem in New York City was formally known as an all white neighborhood and ended up housing around 200,000 African Americans. Harlem soon became the capital of "Black America" While segregation was not legalized in the north as it was in the south, racism and prejudice were still widespread. Nearly every town in the country had some form of dance band and a place to gather.
