Dennis Darwin - Piano Turner

I used to play violin many years ago, but I was never really interested in pianos when I was younger. I learned off me father, many, many years ago. He had music shops and at one time he employed a tuner cause piano sales were very brisk, but that was in the late 40's and 50's, and after that it fizzled out. It's not the thing that a plumber could do. I can do plumbing, but when I do plumbing, the joints all leak water so.... it's the same thing I suppose. It's a skill it's not something you're born with, like a talent, it's just something that you learn. It's a skill just like any other occupation. You need a lot of patience as well. You get strings breaking at times, there's not a lot goes wrong with them really. It's not often strings break, most pianos have the original strings on them, they might be, 80, 90 or 100 years old. I don't think anyone gets the worth out of a piano, they don't live long enough. I'm better in a pub with a pint glass in one hand and a pork pie in t'other. In this house, I cleaned the keys on this piano, they were really dirty, put a new red felt along the back of the keys. She run next door and bring the neighbour in - 'Just look at me piano isn't it beautiful?' All they can do is, what they can see, they appreciate, what they can hear, they don't. They never say 'Oh I'll go and get the neighbour in so they can listen to the piano now as it's nicely tuned.' That never ever happens. I better get these finger prints off here before she comes. They make more fuss about finger prints on pianos, than having dirty windows.
