Beyond Today: Conquering Addictions

Why are so many of us addicted to some kind of self-destructive behavior? Whether it's alcohol, illegal drugs, prescription drugs, pornography, even television, more and more people are becoming addicted to hurtful behaviors that many times leave us feeling empty and destroy personal relationships. Can you conquer an addiction that is ruining your life? Yes you can. But where do you begin? An addiction is a habitual response resulting in a temporary sense of gratification and security. It is a way of coping with internal and external stresses that seem to have no solutions. The addiction is a way of hiding from overwhelming problems that seem to have no way out. The trap is that the addictive behavior avoids real solutions and real healing. We develop an irrational belief system, denial of the addiction and the underlying problems, an extreme sense of self-importance, followed by an extreme sense of worthlessness, an inability to have positive relationships with others - all become cycles of emotional pain and repeated addictive habits. There is a better way. But you can't solve your problems using the same methods that got you where you are now. One of the most important aspects of recovery is to understand your spiritual nature. All of us from time to time experience a deep feeling that we are incomplete, that our greatest needs in life are not being met. We yearn for meaning and purpose. A profound sense of hopelessness underlines all addictions. This incessant, nagging pain is physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. However, there is hope. We possess the marvelous potential to change our lives. The road to recovery is not an easy road for us to travel, but it is a choice we can make. Jesus said that He came to heal the broken-hearted and to proclaim liberty to the captives. His teachings contain the keys to breaking out of the cycle of addiction. It's going to take committment and hard work. You have to change the way you think. You have to change your approach to life. You're going to have to face some hard, cold realities, and here's the first one you need to face - your creator, who made you, loves you and has a purpose for your life. He wants to heal you. Addictive behavior can leave us feeling that life has no meaning, only darkness. To deal with addictions, we must not only deal with the physical causes, but also the spiritual causes. All human beings have a sickness of the spirit. The Creator can and will heal you, but you must be willing to accept that the creator of life knows how to make life work and the Bible is His instruction book. The rewards are to begin to live the way God designed for us today and to understand that He has a great future for all of us. For Beyond Today, I'm Gary Petty.
