As easy as the speech of the Bistrita people, the river Somes washes the banks of Mocod village Here the river is saluted by an old tree that bears a story which has hundreds of years: The Kings of Mocod. The tradition of the Kings of Mocod loses itself in time out of mind, in some warriors’ native customs that are connected to the election of chieftains in the border counties. Metropolitan Sava Abrancovici speaks of them around 1675 and later on so does the poet George Cosbuc. . In time it became a feast of the village that took place every year during the second Easter day. After that it was a sudden stop as the people from Mocod turned to other values coming from the European Union. In the five years that have gone since the last King was chosen, he wondered around the world proving his merit in foreign countries and then he came back to tell his fellows that the identity value consists of the inherited traditions. His fellows have chosen two Kings from the most hard-working and honest youngsters, then took one plum tree to each young maid in the village and the young Queens decorated them with tinsel, colored ribbons, flowers, sweets and dolls as a sign of wealth. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Welcome! We have arranged some clothes to apparel you: this is the shirt, the hem, the pinafore for the front part. „We should not give it to anyone, he should be the most hard-working and wise of all. Who do you think is good for being The King? John, son of Gregory from down the river should be! ... No he is not! Peter, son of William from the valey? No he is not! Little John would be better? Yes, good King!! Let’s put him the peacock hat and honour him properly in the dance. You should wear it with honour and good health. …”We dance with these girls and then we should go!! Long live the King!!!! Acompanied by the musicians and the dancers, The Kings are carried to the church where they are welcomed by all the people from the village, most of them wearing traditional costumes. From place to place they stop for a dance and the suite grows larger. Entering the condition of young men, The Kings of Mocod continue the tradition of "bricelatus" after they swear on the cross that they will be fair, they take part in a symbolyc judgement by which they punish those who have sinned during The Lent. The sinners are carried around the church and beaten on their soles with the briceles (small wooden tools) On the church corner they stop and tanks to the King for the punishment and promise a god behavior. "New Moon in the country brings wheat in summer, and in the store room and outside" "New Moon in the country brings wheat in summer, and in the store room and outside" "New Moon in the country brings wheat in summer, and in the store room and outside" "New Moon in the country brings wheat in summer, and in the store room and outside" „Young boys and girls, let’s punish those who have sinned!/ How do we punish them? let’s bricelate them” Blissful King, the moment of oath came: You should swear that you will give fair judgement to those who have been wrong. We take the oath to give the most honest punishment!!... What about this one? Which is his sin? He run from the field and let his plough there, he run for the fish .. Let’s punish him!.. How do we punish him???... The Kings of Mocod is an agrarian spring ancient custom. Five years ago it took place thanks to the sponsors, the same ones, and now we came again with it. I can tell you that it has several moments: the election of the Kings, which takes place during the Lent, then the decoration of the tree, at each King’s home, the bricelatus, which you can see now at the church, after that we carry the Kings to the river Somes and finally there will be the worship of the tree. The significance is that people are celebrating the revival of nature in spring, and with this custom they hope for a good agricultural year. By means of the bricelatus custom, youngsters that have done small mistakes like: leaving the plough in the field and running after girls, letting the sheeps enter other people's fields and crops, so that they should remember the punishment and improve their behavior. Blissful King, thank you for the punishment you gave me/ May it be for you to recall and improve yourself. This one drove without a licence/ He shoul be punished.../ How shoul we punish him? Tree time run around church with tree stops for beat him This one is married and he looked for young women durin the Lent From here we will go to the Somes river, the Kings are carried on their shoulders by young boys and there they have to pay for the honor of being carried on the shoulders, usually with drinks for young people. This custom is also a maturity test, because by getting a peacock’s hat on his head, a young boy becomes a young man, so he can participate in the dancing wearing the hat decorated with peacock feathers, which is caracteristic to our region. ♪ ♫♪ ♫If you don’t know how to dance, you’d better don’t know how to dig and delve! After the punishment takes place, the colorful suite goes to the river Somes for washing the sins and for prosperity. Here the show is watched by the whole village gathered on the bridge. The Kings are put in the water from where they negociate the value of the gift for those who carried them on the shoulders as real kings. After a few negociations they come off with a small loss and not too wet, but with the promise that at the following party they will give them a lot of drinks. let’s go to the river! The time has come for the Kings to pay us/ They shoul pay us! / What do you promise? In the past there were a lot of traditions and a lot of villages had feasts before Easter or Christmas, each village with a different custom. Blissful Kings, you should enjoy thatyou enterd the line of honourable men.May you live long! Good and healthy , beautiful anr rich tree! A lor of people!
