I'm Ruba,
I am in my third year,
and I'm from Syria.
Starting university at Guelph
was a bit of struggle.
I came here as
an international student
and with English
as my second language.
I had to study English here
to prepare for my
undergraduate studies,
and that was
a bit of a challenge
because while I'm doing that,
I was also struggling
with severe homesickness
and cultural shock.
This made it a struggle for me
to interact with
the new community.
Eventually I started
putting myself out there
and trying to
interact with people,
seeking help from resources.
I started making
more friendships
and interacting with the
folks in my residence.
Writing was a bit
of a struggle for me,
and eventually my friends
referred me to Writing Services
in the library.
They really helped me
improve my language,
improve my assignments,
and get better grades.
I'm passionate about writing,
and I used to write a lot
in my first language, Arabic.
I started writing
reflections in journals,
and that helped me
to improve my English.
I realized that
the hardship and struggles
that I'm going through were
not due to my shortcomings
or my lack of knowledge.
So I was actually
able to build a bridge
between my past and my
current life circumstances
through seeking my
passion of writing.
It really helped me
look at my new life
in a positive way
and face my challenges
with strength and enthusiasm.
