Welcome to the first episode of 'The Prophets of Aisle Six', Raley's Sypermarkets. I'm here in Sacramento today to meet with the Raley's team, a western institution in grocery retailing born out of the great depression in Placerville. Today present in 121 location throughout northern California and Nevada. Let's hear what they have to say. Thank you for having me at Raley's. Our pleasure. I'd like you to take us back to that first store and that first experience that a customer had when they walked in to a Raley's back at the beginning. It was an innovative experience believe it or not, back in 1935. It was one of the first stores to have a parking lot. Back then all the stores faced the street. It's because the car was just coming online and there weren't parking lots. But unfortunately my grandfather couldn't afford a lease hold interest on the street, so he had one that faced the side empty yard and he took a bad situation and turned it into a great situation and made the San Francisco Chronicle by advertising the first drive-in market. Tell me a little about the vision and the mission of the company back then in 1935. Back then it would have been to treat your customers as you would want to be treated. Having come out of the Safeway culture, he learned a lot from the Safeway organization which back then was called Skaggs, Skaggway. And he learned that the way to outperform, and beat the competition was to do a better job. And one of the best ways you could do that was in the way you treated your customers.
