Physical activity can play a key part in improving your health and wellbeing, and there's a really easy way that you can start today, here in Torbay and South Devon. The Healthy Lifestyles Team can support you to increase the amount of physical activity you do and we run a range of courses and initiatives across South Devon, so that wherever you live there’s bound to be something suitable for you, whatever your ability or interest. And our programmes are made for people just like you. In other words, there’s no need for lycra and you don’t need to go to a fancy gym. All you need is the desire to be a little more active. We have a range of activity programmes that can help you to become more active, lose weight, and reduce the risk of developing health conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. So what's available for you to try? You could start by joining our walking programme. Bay Walks is a programme of walks across Torbay led by volunteers. There are short, medium, and long walks in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham – so we have something for everyone. If you are looking to improve your fitness, then try the Fitness in Torbay exercise referral programme. This is a 10 week exercise programme supervised by fully qualified exercise professionals and is open to anyone living in Torbay. Our strength and balance exercises will help you if you have a fear of falling, feel unsteady or have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis. The exercise and camaraderie could help improve your confidence and mobility. No matter how fit you currently are, our programmes will help you to find activities that you can do, and enjoy. The first step on that journey is getting in touch with us to book your free Healthy Lifestyles assessment, just like these people did. I've been able to increase my exercise from 2,000 steps a day to averaging between 5,000 to 6,000. I would say my confidence because I am actually thinking of joining with this gym after this And the amount of energy I have got. Because I really didn't have any energy at all to do nothing. And even just inspired to get up and go.
