Science in Seconds Know Everything RAVES - Sleep Brit Trogen: You will spend approximately 30% of your life unconscious. I'm not talking about the effects of constant binge drinking, but of sleep, which will suck up about 28 years of your life. So it's a little amazing that we still don't know the exact purpose of sleep, considering we do so much of it. There are theories including that it's a regenerative phase or a way to cope with our inability to see in the dark, but probably the coolest idea out there is that sleep, and the REM cycle in particular, is an adaption that evolves to consolidate your memory. People who engage in memorization and studying, separated by periods of sleep, have been found to retain information better than those who study for the same amount of time without sleeping. So while you're sleeping, you're actually going over everything you've learned in the course of the day in precise detail. And depending how boring your life is the first time around, maybe it's a good thing that the second time you're not conscious. Some even believe that dreaming is an artifact of this self-conscious information view, which is why people and objects you might have seen only in passing, during the course of the day, might go on to playing major roles in your nightly fantasies. So the next time you opt for a nap instead of note-taking, there's no need to feel guilty. The wonders of the human mind have got you covered.
