Science in Seconds - Mosquitoes

Science in Seconds Know Everything RANTS - Mosquitoes Torah Kachur: Mosquitoes are probably the most annoying things on the planet. They sting you, and they make you all itchy. They buzz in your ear. I hate them. Not to mention they carry fantastic diseases like malaria, dengue, yellow fever, being stupid. Malaria sucks. Trust me, I've had it. Fever, chills, intestinal difficulties that put "Deli Belly" to shame. And it's also one of the leading preventable deaths in Africa and Southeast Asia. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes that carry the Plasmodium parasite, and the easiest prevention is just having mosquito nets to prevent bites. But mosquito nets are expensive, if your monthly income is two dollars. New research is providing a possible mechanism to eradicate mosquitoes by screwing with their sex lives. Ha! You sting us, and we'll take sex away. Sounds like a pretty good trade-off. More specifically, scientists are developing methods to prevent the formation of a mating plug, a chemical that the male inserts into the female vajayjay after copulation to seal the sperm inside the females. Eradicate mosquitoes. What a fantastic concept. Normally, I wouldn't support strategies to kill off an entire species, but mosquitoes are my one exception. Mosquitoes are really useless. They serve almost no ecological function. They aren't a main dietary source for any predator. They don't help plant pollinations. They only spread lethal diseases. And... their bites are itchy.
