RESIST TEMPTATION (CAPTIONED)

Let us rise for the reading of this morning's Sermon Text recorded for us in Luke's Gospel where we read from Chapter 4, the first 13 verses: JESUS, FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, RETURNED FROM THE JORDAN AND WAS LED BY THE SPIRIT IN THE DESERT, WHERE FOR FORTY DAYS HE WAS TEMPTED BY THE DEVIL. HE ATE NOTHING DURING THOSE DAYS, AND AT THE END OF THEM HE WAS HUNGRY. THE DEVIL SAID TO HIM: "IF YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD, TELL THIS STONE TO BECOME BREAD." JESUS ANSWERED: "IT IS WRITTEN: 'MAN DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE.'" THE DEVIL LED HIM UP TO A HIGH PLACE AND SHOWED HIM IN AN INSTANT ALL THE KINGDOMS OF THE WORLD. AND HE SAID TO HIM, "I WILL GIVE YOU ALL THEIR AUTHORITY AND SPLENDOR, FOR IT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO ME, AND I CAN GIVE IT TO ANYONE I WANT TO. SO IF YOU WORSHIP ME, IT WILL ALL BE YOURS." JESUS ANSWERED, "IT IS WRITTEN: 'WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'" THE DEVIL LED HIM TO JERUSALEM AND HAD HIM STAND ON THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE TEMPLE. "IF YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD," HE SAID, THROW YOURSELF DOWN FROM HERE. FOR IT IS WRITTEN: "'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU CAREFULLY; THEY WILL LIFT YOU UP IN THEIR HANDS, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'" JESUS ANSWERED, "IT SAYS: 'DO NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'" WHEN THE DEVIL HAD FINISHED ALL THIS TEMPTING, HE LEFT HIM UNTIL AN OPPORTUNE TIME. This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray: Glorious and gracious God, may the words of my mouth and the meditation of each of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight, our only source of hope and comfort. Amen. Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. What a tremendous under- statement the Gospel writer recalls for us. TREMENDOUS really when he says: "AND AT THE END OF THEM, HE WAS HUNGRY." He hadn't eaten for forty (40) days! Obviously, at the end of those days, He was going to be hungry. But Jesus had gone out into the desert, full of the Spirit, to focus Himself for this public ministry, to focus Himself on God and to spend time preparing for the work that He was going to do. And, of course, while He is there for those forty days, Satan is right there at His side, continually tempting Him to give up His mission! Continually getting Him to do one ... simple, solitary sin, that would destroy the Father's plan totally and completely. The Devil was right there with Him continually, coming to Him to get Him to sin. And at the end of those forty days, it would be OBVIOUS that He would be hungry. I'm sure this morning there were people already wondering if we had snacks after church. And if there were going to be enough. When we KNOW that there are snacks in that refrigerator. There are snacks in that freezer. There are snacks put away for next week already. And yet, we're worried. Or we think what we're gonna have for lunch. And maybe even while we're eating lunch, we think: I wonder what we're gonna have for dinner! But think of someone who didn't have food ... for 40 days! And He was hungry. So, of course. Satan is going to come to Jesus himself and say: You have such strength. You have such power and ability. See this little stone? Just turn it into bread. Solves Your problem. You're no longer hungry and You have something to eat. Think of that temptation. And yet, Jesus responds to him with: Man does not live by bread alone. But Satan wasn't done. Satan thought: Well, if I can't get Him to fulfill His own personal sinful desires, I'm gonna take Him someplace to maybe get Him to think about that GLOBAL desire but if He wants to be a king, I'll show Him all the kingdoms of the world. And I'll say: They can all be Yours ... if You just bow down and worship me. And Jesus said to him: Worship the Lord our God alone and Him only. So Satan then takes Him to Jerusalem. That Holy City. The City of God where God's dwelling was on earth ... the Temple. And he says: Throw Yourself down from the top of here. If You really trust and believe that God keeps His Word and that He will send His angels to You so You won't have Your foot hit a stone ... they will keep You safe ... You throw Yourself at this Temple. And Jesus responds with: We're not to tempt the Lord our God. It didn't stop Satan. Scripture tells us that Satan left Him for a more opportune time, to come back to Him once again and pummel Him with anything that would get Him to break the Law. And the same thing is true for us today as His followers. For those of us who trust the victory that Jesus gained over Satan. For those of us who believe that He was the true Son of God, the only Savior the One who sacrificed Himself on the cross of Calvary so that our sins would be removed, we KNOW that Satan is also going to come after us. That he is going to come after us at the most opportune time for him to trip us up. Maybe it is coming to us to satisfy our personal selfish desires. To put our self over the rest of anyone else. And if I'm hungry, I'm gonna eat and I'm gonna do what I need to, to eat. I don't care about anyone else or anything else. Or maybe he is going to come to us and get us to think about our own "grandizing". To puff us up. To say: Look - you can have the attention and the glory of the world for you. Or maybe your neighborhood. Or maybe your company. Or maybe your church. It can all be yours if you just give yourself to me. Or sometimes he comes to us just as he came to Eve in the Garden, and says: Did God really say. Did God really say that? And he wants us to question what God has written and recorded for us. He wants us to question what is God's will for our lives. To think that somehow WE know better, WE know best and we can accomplish everything we can on our own. He comes to each of us at the opportune time for him to steal our individual faith for himself. He wants you in hell! He wants EVERY soul in hell and is going to stop at NOTHING to accomplish that. And we're reminded that our strength is not enough. Our strength is not going to fight against every attack of Satan. We realize that because every day we fall prey to him and to his wants and his desires. Every day we realize our own sinfulness that we cannot remove, that we cannot make up for, that we cannot take care of. We ARE as helpless as the children of Israel being slaves in Egypt. They were never gonna free themselves. They were never going to get out of that bondage and slavery that was there. If God Himself had not come in with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, the sea would never have parted. The Egyptians would never have dumped on them their wealth and sent them on their way saying: Get out of here. It was by the power and strength of God. And so, too, our salvation was by the power and strength of God. A mighty act. His outstretched arms that He saved us as He offered Himself as the Perfect Lamb. The One who had kept the Law perfectly and had resisted EVERY temptation of Satan. So He understands our struggle. He understands what we go through. And our reliance is not on OUR strength and OUR power, but our reliance is on Christ. That when Satan comes to us we need to stop and recognize his attack. His assaults and to stop it. To call on the Name of Christ and His glory and His strength and His power and Satan will go running away. He may come at it like that roaring lion seeking who he can devour. But in the face of Christ, he runs away like a wimpering puppy. Defeated ... knowing that he cannot win. And we're reminded of what Jesus Himself used when He was tempted. He used the Word of God. That powerful, active Word of God to put Satan in his place, to realize that this was of most importance. And the Word of God in that strength and in that power accomplishes what God sends it to do. When we realize that we cannot live by bread alone and our physical blessings are not the most important, we put God and His righteousness first ... all of these things are going to be added to us as well. Our God WILL take care of us! We trust Him and we realize that placing ourselves in his hands, as the Psalmist reminds us, He IS going to take care of us. He is our Refuge. He IS our Strength. We realize that when we want the glory of the world, that glory fades. That praise goes away. All you have to do is look at the last five presidents that this country has had, to see how fickle the praise of this country is. Is that what we're looking for? Is that what we really want? A good time in this life. A good name here. An easy time and to lose everything for eternity? We confess that Jesus IS our Lord and we put Him first and we worship Him and Him alone, as we will do throughout eternity. He IS our God and there is our Strength. There is our Hope. There's the Foundation. We are reminded as Paul told the Roman congregation that with that faith we confess Jesus as our Lord. We BRING that worship out in our lives. We STAND on that Word. The importance of standing on that Word is knowing what it says. And being able to defend against Satan who's going to twist it. Or to misuse it. Or to someone that we come into contact with that wants to take one passage out of Scripture and distort its meaning. How important it is for us to have knowledge of the WHOLE of Scripture. To be able to speak to ALL aspects of God. And ALL aspects of His will. And to use our faith to put those passages together. To show people that Jesus IS the Lord and Savior of all. And that we use that Word to combat Satan. That we fight against him. We remind ourselves today of that difficult work that our Lord and Savior did. It wasn't easy. But He ACCOMPLISHED our salvation. He never promised US an easy life either, but He said I KNOW, I understand, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS. Let us resist temptation. Amen. Let us rise. Now may the peace of God which goes beyond all of our understanding, keep your hearts and your minds, and especially your lives in the one true faith unto life everlasting. Amen.
