Leadership Straight from Bill Hybels Evangelism Every Christ follower has to cross a marginal line in his or her development. This is the one I crossed many years ago and I ask Willow people to cross. I say, "When you look at family, colleagues, friends and neighbors who are far from God, ask and answer this question, do you believe in your heart of hearts that everyone you know who is far from God would be better off if Christ were at center of their life." How you frame evangelism determines if you are excited about it or you feel dutiful about it or guilty if you do not do it. When I realized that everyone I know who is far from God would be better off if Christ were at the center of their life. They would have peace that passes human understanding. They would have divine guidance. They would have capacities to love beyond their own capacities. They would have the inner guidance of the Holy Spirit for moral decision making. They would have their eternity secure. They would look at the world through Holy Spirit lenses. On and on the list would go. When you start to look around and instead of looking at someone's behavior... Sometimes we look at some people and say, "Oh, they behave so horribly. Would we want them in the church?" No, wait, wait. If Christ were at the center of their life, maybe He would clean up some of that stuff. Then maybe they would be stand up members of our church some day. Isn't the question really would everyone you know who is far from God be better off if Christ were at the center of it? Everywhere I go if I am sitting next to someone striking up a casual conversation I do not sit there and think, "Now I have to argue whether Christianity is true." That feels like a tall hill to climb these days. I think, "Before I engage with this person do I actually believe if they are far from God that their life would be better if Christ were at the center of it?" Well, now let's ask how are you, what do you do for a living, how is your life? I go at it that way. I am wondering what is currently at the center. Then it makes me wonder if they would be open to having Christ at the center. All of you can do this is the point. All of you can wonder. All of you can be curious. Just ask what is at the center of what your whole life is about? Christ is at the center of mine. I am not saying that is better or worse, but it sure has been better in my case. Then you can tell your story.
