? . . . the newspaper that's on . . . ? . . .? — There's some for you if you'd like any. — Yes, Karen and Patrick, if you'd like some . . . — OK. — You . . . ? . . . take some for . . . — Ah, yes. — There's some for everyone. — Right, OK. — If you're hungry, if you're thirsty also, eh. — Yes, if you . . . ? . . . something. — There are two small cans of beer there, Karen, if you'd like one. — Yeah, the Belgian one . . . My big . . . ? . . . with beer. . . . ? . . . is that it? — The wine is right there, Karen, if you'd like some. What's that? — . . . ? . . . — Ah, yes. — . . . ? . . . — No? . . . ? . . . — Did you have the . . . ? . . . ? — No. — Yeah. — Because — . . . ? . . . — . . ? . . . more. — OK. — . . . the switch here. — OK, it's good, it's good, it's good. I thought that I . . . ? . . . more than . . . ? . . . — . . . ? . . . . . . in general but I still have one? on it because . . . we're passing in front of the . . . ? . . . — OK. — . . . ? . . . but . . . ? . . . — and . . . ? . . . in the . . .? . . . also, yeah. — Hmm? — . . . ? . . .? — Uh, yes. — OK. — If I make . . . ? . . . ? — It's good. We won't have too much . . . ? . . . ? — . . . ? . . . — Yeah, it's uh . . . — It can be very difficult. — But, . . . ? . . . usually, but twenty-four hours without stopping normally . . . ? . . . but still long . . . ? . . . long days. — I adapt. . . . ? . . . the newspaper. — Hand it to me. A director of rock? Yeah, yes, like I was saying it's, this is the the soundtrack from the series I followed The Sons of Anarchy. So it's a, a list of, of the best songs that were played in the in the series. — It's a good series for boat directors. — Yeah, it's a unique series, for example, because it's very very intense. It's . . . I don't know if you've had the chance to . . . ? . . . but — No. — it's very intense, uh, it's really the an, an outlaw motorcycle gang It's really a look from the inside at . . . all the positive aspects but also all the, the negative aspects of an outlaw motorcycle gang, but Leon Sutter who plays a small role in the series, Leon Sutter, the writer, the creator actually has really managed, despite the violence, the crime, the um . . . all the illegal things that happen in that environment, to find an audience. It really . . . it really surprised me. I can tell you that I was never really drawn to the series until a colleague talked to me about it, then, after that I really . . . I really fell under the series' spell too. — It's got humanity. — Yeah, yeah, that's true and uh there are, there are . . . There are strong fraternal values for . . . Yes, hello. Yes. It's direct to . . . ? . . . ? All right. Eight forty-five pm, OK, got it . . . ? . . . ? And its destination? . . . ? . . . ? OK, . . . ? . . . that. Right, eight forty-five . . . ? . . . Goodbye. Well, I didn't have the time to . . . ? . . . They've just assigned me to my boat to . . . ? . . . the Federal . . . ? . . . and uh, they're sending me off at eight forty-five to the Port . . . ? . . . station, Point des . . . ? . . . then , , , ? . . . It's not very . . . ? . . . . . . ? . . . of the year, water levels are sufficiently high in the St. Lawrence River. The drafts won't be any problem for transit until nearly eleven meters. So, with a boat that's eight point twenty-seven there's no problem at all in transiting the . . . ? . . . Québec. . . . ? . . . eight forty-five and we have the name of the boat . . . ? . . . What I always do at this point is to check on the tides, the tide time in Québec and then . . . the Federal . . . ? . . . I can . . . ? . . . to see what type of boat and its characteristics because it's . . . this type of boat is well-known, we frequently have the chance to work on it. . . . ? . . . uh of the company . . . ? . . . Canadian . . . ? . . . and then these are boats that we know well And the week . . . some days back I . . . ? . . . its sister ship, the the Federal . . . ? . . . So, I know exactly what type of boat we're going to board. So, we'll take a look at the tide times. For very large boats we'll also check . . . the traffic, meaning the other boats that we'll be coming across during our transit because now there are some very very large vessels navigating the river and . . . we have to coordinate the passages, encounters and movements of these, the movements of these boats. So . . . I'll check on the traffic but it shouldn't be a big problem today because . . . ? . . . a big boat. The boat is two hundred meters long by about twenty-three meters wide. So, for us it's not, it's not a big boat. . . . ? . . . you . . . ? . . . ? — Yes. . . . .? . . . ? — When should we call? — . . . ? . . . — . . . ? . . . OK. . . .? . . . ? — Yes. — . . . ? . . . Also, we always check out the weather. So, we . . . ? . . . the environment in Canada and we look at the weather we'll be encountering on our trip. So, there are warnings but more in the East. From Trois Rivières . . . ? . . . and the most eastward part, uh, westward part of our transit, the first stage of our voyage this evening . . . ? . . . winds from the west at two hundred and fifteen knots. — Can I have . . . ? . . . ? — Yes. . . . ? . . . winds from the north at two hundred and fifteen knots. So, there's no problem there. We'll take a look at other sectors. The . . . ? . . . at Beauport, Beauport, that's Québec, . . . the same thing. Westerly winds at two hundred and fifteen knots, heading north at two hundred and fifteen knots this evening, then slowing down to light winds around midnight. So the winds will go from the west turning towards the north at two hundred and fifteen knots, then diminishing at around midnight. We won't have any problems with the winds either. The fact is we can collect quite a bit of information to prepare for the voyage . . . the tides, the weather, the characteristics of the vessel we're assigned to, and then, I don't know what kind of cargo but usually these, these ships are loaded with, um, with grain when they're coming down the seaway, meaning they leave the Great Lakes . . . ? . . . towards the sea, normally they carry grain, and when they're coming up, meaning from the sea towards the Great Lakes, they are often loaded um with . . . ? . . . products arriving from Europe and . . . that are destined for. . . . ? . . . or the um, the markets in the Midwest in America for . . . ? . . . — Mhmm. Not long ago, the Laurentian Pilotage Authority . . . Pilotage in Canada is something that that . . . still . . . ? . . . by the law on pilotage. The government created four Crown corporations in 1972 that are responsible for managing pilotage in Canada. The four entities that were created . . . These are the Pilotage Authorities — one on the West Coast, the West Coast Pilotage Authority, one on the East Coast, the East Coast Pilotage Authority, one on the Great Lakes, and then one on the St. Lawrence River called the Laurentian Pilotage Authority. So, this is the Authority that I belong to and the Authority inspects the service providers, me, I work for the Central St. Lawrence Pilots Corporation, which is one of the pilotage service providers for the, the Laurentian sector. The other service provider is the Lower St. Lawrence Pilots Corporation. The Lower St. Lawrence Pilots provide pilotage services in Québec from Laval to Escoumins. So the Escoumins pilots, the Lower St. Lawrence Pilots Corporation has approximately seventy-five members and then ours has a hundred and ten members divided into three different sectors: the sector I belong to, Québec Trois-Rivières, then . . .? . . . there's the Trois-Rivières Montréal and then there are the, the Port of Montréal pilots. So, these are the three large groups of pilots. Not long ago, the Authority developed um a web application for our piloting records. Later you'll see that I have to fill out a form to um confirm that the piloting service was provided and . . . in order to be paid but these paper forms will be phased out in the next few years and replaced by electronic forms that we're going to see here. So the form is generated then, once on board I'll need to verify the vessel's characteristics, then I'll confirm that the assigned time is correct and then . . . I just have to write in the time of landing, when I will disembark from my boat then . . . the electronic form is sent directly to the Authority, It will . . . facilitate the exchange of information and it will also speed up the . . . ? . . . requests from the Authority to the . . . maritime agents and then the Corporation to the Authority. So, here they . . . ? . . . assigned for seven thirty pm. They assigned me for eight forty. We'll correct it. The . . . ? . . . once we're on board. After that, I'll leave the pilot boat. We'll already pre-register the the disembarkment. So, for example, the sixth, 2013, we'll disembark the sixth. I'd say probably at around two fifteen in the morning. So, it's pre-registered. All that's left is to correct it once on board. There isn't much time to take advantage of the pool. — Well, today I didn't have much time. The kids came home, there's the . . . ? . . . and all but . . . I actually thought that this day, today it's not all that hot . . . .? . . . I enjoy it often enough. I really like to swim in the afternoon the, the . . . it's still a little cold today. We'll go take a look at our chickens on the . . . ? . . . Ah, yes. They're looking really good. Another fifteen minutes and they should be done. We'll close the door . . . I'm going to close the door. . . . ? . . . We'll go relax while the chickens finish cooking. OK. Did you do it?
