The Tamarind Tree The tamarind tree is there before the village. It is several centuries old. It is proof of a battle between 2 kings; one who spent the night under this tamarind and the other in the village of Baback. That was in 1777. King Malicoumba Khoudia Bissire Fall, of Royaume du Cayor, grandfather of Yeli Fall, with whom I have these notes, and the king Birima Mawa Fall and their clash at Pout Batiment. King Malicoumba was victorious in that combat, and he spent the night here, under that tamarind tree. And Birima Mawa Fall went to sleep in Baback. 1777 is the year of that famous battle and 1840 is the year that this village was founded. This is proof that the village found the tamarind here, in this place. Just like the country's flag, for Notto, the tamarind tree is a symbol. It welcomes all the distinguished guests, kings, village chiefs, religious chiefs. Oumar Foutyou Tall, Mame Cheikh Anta Mbacke, Maba Diakhou Ba, Serigne Massamba, brother of Serigne Touba, Serigne Babacar Sy, Serigne Saliou Mbacke... All the presidents of Senegal, Aboulaye Wade, Abdou Diouf, Senghor. All of them have been welcomed by the population. But here, what's more, it's a historic site and it's where the chiefs of the township, the first being Abdou Khadre Leye, held all the trials in Diobass. They called the population together on Mondays. And there were cuffs that were used to hold those who were accused of being guilty. And so for us it's a symbol, part of the identity of the village. It plays an important role, that tamarind, but I can't tell you everything - it's top secret.
