My name is Lauren Morgenthaler and I'm a Sociology major with a minor in Spanish. I entered UESP when I was a freshman here at Oregon State because I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to major in. At first I looked at Exercise and Sports Sciences and, although I love sports, I didn't really know if that's what I wanted to do for a career. So I took a Geography class that, I think it was GEO 105 with Becker and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was super interesting, just the cultural specifically the cultural part of Geography and then I went to talk with him because, Tiffany, my advisor, was like if you really enjoy a subject, you should probably talk to the professor and see what their department's like and what other classes you have to take and where you can go career wise. And I went and talked with him and I really liked the cultural Geography. But at Oregon State, that's not the focus, so it was good to talk to him and realize that that wasn't exactly the path I wanted to go down. And then I also took Sociology and it was the biggest intro class and I really enjoyed it. And so the next term I took another Sociology class and I enjoyed that one even more and so I just kept taking Sociology with everything else. And I kind of realized I should probably major in Sociology because that was a bulk of my classes and that's where I am now. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with it, but I really enjoy going to class and doing homework so that makes a big difference. My one piece of advice would be to take a bunch of different classes. I mean, you never really know what you're going to be interested in. I would not have guessed Sociology coming here And I think that's the great strength of Oregon State is you have your Bacc-Core program which you need to take. And if you're undecided, I'd recommend taking something in every class and then, if you find something that's super interesting that you enjoy doing, to go in and talk with the professor that teaches that class and ask them how they got into it, what career paths can come out of this, and what's required to get a major in that and, I mean, it helps a lot. And if you really like that class, take another one. And if you continue to like that class, keep going. And if you don't, then maybe it's not for you. And also, to not be deterred if you don't like one class because everything's different. And it might get better at the next level.
