Science in Seconds - Save the Panda

Science in Seconds Know Everything RANTS - Save The Panda Torah Kachur:  Save the panda, save the world. I mean it – if we can't save the panda, how can we save ugly creatures? I know. The monumental panda conservation effort is larger because they are so darn adorable. But there are a few people who say that the panda should be way down on the list of creatures to save. They say species like the Axolotl, or Delhi Sands flower‑loving fly, are more important to maintain a large ecosystem and enhanced biodiversity. Whereas pandas have cornered themselves into such a small niche they don't deserve to survive. They're evolutionarily unsustainable. I say, bullshit. But I also had ‑‑ OK, still have a stuffed panda collection. If we stop our conservation efforts for the panda, which means preventing poaching, deforestation and human encroachment into their habitat, pandas will go extinct, gone, forever. The loss of the panda may not have a strong ecological impact on the world, but it will be a dark day for humankind. If we let the panda disappear we are giving ourselves permission to fail, permission to cut down pristine forests and kill animals for nothing but their fur. We will be giving ourselves permission to destroy the earth. The panda is the poster child. If we can't save the panda, we can't save the world. We can stand up and say that we will not allow humans to destroy the very thing keeping us here; our earth and all the diverse species that live on it.
