The writing process was spread over quite a few years. I just performed Fever on the Bayou, which is a song I started well over 20 years ago, but could never figure out the last verse. It's a song that I was co-writing with Will Jennings, he's a famous composer— wrote like the title track to The Titanic, Our Love Goes On. He's a really big film writer, and great song writer. But we could never together figure out the last verse. Until one day I got in a conversation about French and English with a totally separate conversation, and I went ah—French and English, it's Cajun! Ah, and there's a patois, and I grew up in Southeast Houston, and there's quite a large Cajun population there and I could never understand what they were saying. So I figured it didn't matter—my last verse, just as long as it sounded like Cajun patois. I see you have my book Chinaberry Sidewalks down there. Once I spent 10 years writing a book, it sort of slowed down the songwriting process 'cause now I apply a lot of the revision process that I learned writing sentences and paragraphs and chapters into writing songs, so songs took a while but the recording went very fast. It took us no time to record Tarpaper Sky. I can say without a doubt that I get better at what I do. Experience is— it really informs creative work. I'll never retire, I'll work until my heart doesn't beat anymore because that's where the inspiration is gonna come from, it's where the joy comes from. And the fulfillment—it's not as important to me as my family, but it's right there after my family. There's still plenty of reason to carry on.
