WELCOME TO ZION Blessed through Christ Revelation 22:12-17, 20 Let us rise for the reading of this morning's sermon text recorded for us by John in his Revelation where we read from Chapter 22 beginning with Verse 12: BEHOLD, I AM COMING SOON! MY REWARD IS WITH ME, AND I WILL GIVE TO EVERYONE ACCORDING TO WHAT HE HAS DONE. I AM THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA, THE FIRST AND THE LAST, THE BEGINNING AND THE END. BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO WASH THEIR ROBES, THAT THEY MAY HAVE THE RIGHT TO THE TREE OF LIFE AND MAY GO THROUGH THE GATES INTO THE CITY. OUTSIDE ARE THE DOGS, THOSE WHO PRACTICE MAGIC ARTS, THE SEXUALLY IMMORAL, THE MURDERERS, THE IDOLATERS AND EVERYONE WHO LOVES AND PRACTICES FALSEHOOD. "I, JESUS, HAVE SENT MY ANGEL TO GIVE YOU THIS TESTIMONY FOR THE CHURCHES. I AM THE ROOT AND THE OFFSPRING OF DAVID, AND THE BRIGHT MORNING STAR." THE SPIRIT AND THE BRIDE SAY, "COME!" AND LET HIM WHO HEARS SAY, "COME!" WHOEVER IS THIRSTY, LET HIM COME; AND WHOEVER WISHES, LET HIM TAKE THE FREE GIFT OF THE WATER OF LIFE. HE WHO TESTIFIES TO THESE THINGS SAYS, "YES, I AM COMING SOON." AMEN. COME, LORD JESUS. This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray: This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Amen. Sermon text taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION 1978, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers. Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And especially this morning our Confirmands. Busy days, the last few days, hasn't it been? Lots of things packed in to a few short moments. Big events. Your examination. That you all whined and cried to me about two years ago that you could never, ever do. "I'll be scared to death." "I can't answer all of those questions." But with maturity, comes knowledge. And you CAN do things. Things you never even thought possible. And I think we all can sit in our ... on our seats this morning, and think back to all of the things in OUR lives, that WE thought, that had been impossible ... for US. For all of those blessings that God has brought into our life, that have led us on the path of our life to places we never thought we were going to go. With people we never thought we would be with. But it's interesting how God pours out into our lives such excitement and such joy as we follow Him. The confirmation of your faith. The faith that God gave to you ... most of you ... as babies, as infants in your baptism, by the power of the Holy Spirit and through that Holy Spirit, He has led you here to this day. As well as the rest of us, living out our lives of faith that the Holy Spirit keeps and guards and protects us as a blessing from God. To live as His children. To understand that our Savior IS at the throne of God and rules over all. John reminds us in his Revelation that He is the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. He's the Root and Offspring of David; He's the Bright Morning Star, that was talked about in the Old Testament. Prophesied of, He is the One who is there at Creation ... with the Father and the Spirit when this world came into existence. That as a blessing from God it was created in all of its vast splendor and wonder and glory and God placed people in this earth to live here and to serve Him. He created Adam and then He created Eve to be his helpmeet so he would not be alone. So that he would have companionship. So that the two of them could live together. Weddings are BIG DAYS in people's lives. As they stand before the Lord's altar vowing to love each other until they are parted by death. It's a big day for some of you in your future that God will bless you with. And think of those blessings that Adam and Eve had in the Garden of Eden communing with God. Caring and tending ... for that Garden. But we realize those blessings soon became overshadowed by the sin that came in and destroyed that perfection. When Eve listened to the serpent. Listened to Satan and WILLINGLY disobeyed God. When Adam stood there and allowed her to do it and PARTICIPATED in it. That brought down the wrath and punishment of God upon that sin and upon themselves. God refused to let them live in that corrupt and sinful state. God REFUSED that they would be condemned to hell for all eternity and He took loving action. He separated the woman and the serpent. He said there would be distance between the children of God and the children of Satan. He drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden and placed angels there to keep them out so they couldn't return and eat from the Tree of Life. They could not come back in and perpetuate that evil into eternity. God's blessing to them was that He would save them. He, would bring them ... to His heavenly Home. In John's Revelation, we see that picture. That picture of the Holy City, opened up by what Jesus Christ has done ... the work that He has accomplished as our Lord and Savior. That sin has been destroyed. Death has been destroyed. Satan has been destroyed and we through faith believe and trust in ALL of those blessings and they ARE OURS! And we have the right to enter that Holy City and once again eat from that Tree of Life! To live eternally with God! To live eternally with the Church of Christ! Praising Him for the blessings that are ours! Praising Him for ALL of the work that He has done as our Lord and our Savior and the JOY that it brings into our lives. We realize as we walk through this life it is not going to be a perfect life. Sin is still all around us. Evil is still there as well. And even though there are many joyous things that you can look forward to, as you grow in your faith ... as we all grow ... there are things that are going to blindside us and things that are almost going to devastate us. Friends, that you have, will die. People, that you know, will fall into sin and go down a path of self-destruction that you can't stop. People will get caught in sin that bring upon them all of the wrath of God because they don't want to repent. And people will come into your lives who refuse to believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and your hearts will ache. Because you know that they will be people outside of that Holy City. That should not shake your faith. That should not shake our confidence. It shouldn't surprise us that that's going to happen in our life. But we know that God STILL blesses us. That our God is alive and well and He lives with us each and every day. That, yes, He blesses us but He is also there supporting us through our darkest of trials, through our own death, through our own difficulties He does not leave us or forsake us. But He comes with His comfort. And He comes with His presence. Our Savior, Jesus Christ prays for each and every one of us. We heard that recorded in our Gospel Lesson for today. He prayed for you and me, that we would have that faith and understand that love of God and that unity that is there in the faith. Just as He and the Father are One, we and He and God the Father are one. That we come together based on the unity of the teachings of Scripture. And we hold fast to that, in this life. Because out of all the things that happen, the one thing that will always remain is the Word of God. Everything else is gonna pass away. (Excuse me.) Everything else is perishing, but God and His Word and His Kingdom will last forever. And just as the Apostle John reminds us this morning, we take note of it, that we WANT the Lord Jesus Christ to come! The culmination of each of our faiths. Yes, today is exciting as you stand before this group of believers, fellow believers in Christ and confirm your faith. But we all long for that day when our faith will be complete. When ALL of our sin will be removed. When we no longer have the fear of death because we have eternal life and we are with God in His presence, day and night. Serving the Lamb at the center of the throne and living in His glory and living in His grace. And we know that He is going to come. It is our prayer that He would bless us and come soon. Amen. Let us rise. Now may the peace of God which goes beyond all of our understanding, keep your hearts and your minds and especially your lives in the one true faith unto life everlasting. Amen.
