The Circus Project

The Oregonian Video Nicolette Render didn't plan to run away with the circus. Even after a friend took her to practice one night, Nicolette didn't think she could commit. She couldn't even do a pull-up. But circus followed her. For weeks, she couldn't stop thinking about the trapeze. I used to fantasize that maybe I could join the marines. So that I could just really feel like my body was all out. Just completely exhausted. Completely devoted to something. But nothing, nothing has been like The Circus. So, she gave in. She joined The Circus Project, and practiced three times a week. But it wasn't easy. I felt really weak. I felt...flabby. It was very hard at first, because some people, especially those who were particularly muscular, were able to learn some of the initial tricks much faster. But she kept at it. She grew stronger. More confident. Eventually, the tricks became easier. There are moments where I feel quite good. When I'm able to climb all the way up the rope without slipping, and I don't fear for my life. And then, I can feel almost in control. I feel like I'm not going to fall. I feel like my body is strong enough that it can hold me. And then you can have that little flourish. And then you're having fun. Your body feels decent because you're not in a lot of pain. And it's best lighted as a seduction. I think at the point where Erin and I touch arms I feel, you know, like aroused, thinking about it. Which is kind of weird, because Erin and I have a pretty sterile relationship on the ground. But it... is magical. You know, we fall in love. That's how it feels. Circus is really just a metaphor, she says. She needed a community. Someone to catch her when she invariably falls. She found that in her trapeze partner, Erin Garrow. In the end, Erin is holding me. With one hand, on my neck. And...I'm holding him with my one leg. I'm just completely in his hands. And it's that kind of surrender that is very peaceful. And it's very satisfying. The Oregonian - Voice by Casey Parks
