>> I would definitely say I was an emotional eater. My work was very stressful. So I used food as a way to comfort myself. >> My family is not a heavyset family, except my dad, but I have always struggled and always wanted to be something else but never could get there. >> My doctor kind of was like, "Hey, look, you know, you're not super unhealthy. But, you know, your results are a little off, you could stand to lose a little bit of weight." >> I've used Weight Watchers in the past. I've used, I mean, any diet there was, I definitely tried it. So tried it, failed, tried it, failed. >> Over the years, I don't know how many times I've been to different programs, tried different things, nothing ever stuck. >> I'm the kind of person who wants to understand. I want to know why. I don't want to be told what to eat. I want to know why. >> The number one most important thing that I teach my clients is, right off the bat, food is information. >> So we need to do something differently. We need to say, "I'm worth it. And this matters. And starting today is better than starting tomorrow." >> And I felt that a holistic perspective was much more complimentary to my way of thinking, my way of seeing myself, and my way of living. >> I have become aware. I have become aware of what I eat and how it affects my body. >> So now I'm much more focused in terms of the food that I eat, on how it's going to make me feel. >> And I think that's what's fulfilling is to see that shift that happens in my clients is that the aha moments of, "Oh, that's why I feel that way. Oh, that's how I can do it differently." >> I feel more successful at work. I'm sleeping better. I'm happier. I'm able to be a more active participant in society, and my friendships, my relationships and things like that. >> I'm buying new clothes in smaller sizes. >> I have gotten rid of medications, blood pressure medication, cholesterol medication. Everything about my life is better. That's the truth. >> I'm Michael DeSanti, and I'm a Health Coach. >> I'm DeAnna Lynn Englezos, and I'm a Health Coach. >> I'm Jeanette BronĂ©e, I'm a Health Coach. >> Hello, everyone, and welcome to your virtual celebration. As you just saw, you're beginning an incredibly transformational year and joining hundreds of thousands of graduates and Health Coaches all over the world. I'm so happy that you're here with us tonight and going forward in the year ahead. My name is Amy, and I work on the Education Team here at IIN. >> And I'm Shauna, and I develop our nutrition and health related curriculum. >> We also have Wendy and Yaffa in the Facebook group, who will be posting during tonight's celebration and answering questions. >> During this broadcast, we'll go over a few topics to help prepare you for the course, including a little history about IIN and its mission, what to expect during this year, and what your graduation requirements are. We'll do a visualization exercise to help kick off the year with intention. And we're going to answer some of your burning questions and go over some other important information about the year ahead. >> So let's dive in. First, I want to tell you a little bit about IIN and how it all started. Joshua Rosenthal founded the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in 1992. He rented out a kitchen and taught macrobiotics to about 20 people at a time in New York City. Since then, we have become an online school, reaching around the globe with over 100,000 graduates. >> And our growth is really a testament to how needed Health Coaches are and how eager people are to adopt a holistic model of health. Lifestyle-related diseases like obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancers are at an all-time high. But that doesn't have to be the case. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, about 80% of premature cases of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes can be eliminated through lifestyle and nutritious diet. This is exactly where you come in as future Integrative Nutrition Health Coaches. >> Health Coaches are really the missing piece in the current healthcare system. Health Coaches support clients and making dietary and lifestyle shifts to transform their health and wellness. We provide a safe space for clients to explore, not just the how but the why behind change. We hold them accountable to their goals and empower them to take control of their story and their life. We are an essential part of the future of healthcare, and we are so needed. >> At IIN, we believe in a preventative model of health and that everyone deserves a chance to be healthy. To that end, we teach our students about the power of both the diet and lifestyle to help prevent disease and support a vibrant and meaningful life. We are going to teach you that a good diet is great, but if you're avoiding other areas of your life, they can end up negatively impacting your health over time. >> This is exactly why we refer to these factors as primary food, a term we use to describe what nourishes you off the plate. We also use the Circle of Life as a visual tool to explore the different areas in your life that play a role in wellness. When it comes to changing someone's health or even your own, you'll be amazed at the impact you can have by simply balancing out the areas in the Circle of Life. Coaching someone to form healthy relationships, tap into their creativity, move more, explore their spirituality, and manage their stress. >> Speaking of managing stress, starting a year-long program is a big commitment. And we know that any time you start something new, it can be a little overwhelming. Since we're both graduates of the program, we definitely know that feeling, which means now is a great time to walk you through a visualization exercise to help refocus. So let's take a step back for a second and think about what inspired you to start this program in the first place and what you'd like to get out of it. >> First, no matter where you are... Take a second to check in with yourself. Sit tall in your chair, lengthen your spine, and feel both feet making contact with the floor. Close your eyes and begin to notice your breath. Inhale through the nose... Let your stomach expand, and exhale slowly through the nose. Once again, inhale... And exhale. Now think back to the moment you decided to sign up for this program. What was your motivation? What were you feeling? Maybe you have your own health goal you want to meet... Maybe you want to make a major change in your life... Or maybe you dream of having your own health coaching business or writing a book. No matter what sparked you to begin this journey, I want you to take a second to visualize yourself applying your education in a way that's going to light you up and make you happy. No matter what that might look like for you. If you're not totally sure yet what you would like to do, that's okay. And even if you're sure, it's good to have an open mind. Either way, visualize yourself on the right path and trust that it is leading you to where you're meant to be. Keep seeing yourself on that path as you continue to breathe. Now take a deep breath in. And as you exhale, clear your thoughts. Simply breathe in and breathe out. Slowly wiggle your fingers and toes, shake out your shoulders, and come back to us. >> Amazing. Thanks, Amy. Any kind of visualization exercise, meditation, or prayer is a great way to settle your thoughts. If at any time during your studies you're feeling overwhelmed, it's an awesome way to help manage stress and to really refocus. >> If you have any other stress management tips, share them on Facebook. We would love to hear. When it comes to changing someone's health or even your own, you will be amazed at the impact you can have by simply slowing down to breathe and gain some perspective. This is an example of primary food. >> Primary food is one of our five main silos that you'll learn about in the curriculum. As Amy said earlier, primary food refers to all of the things that nourish you off your plate. The primary food content is designed to help you start thinking about the bigger picture when it comes to someone's health. And it's what makes our program so unique. You'll also dive into the importance of healthy relationships, having a career that fuels you, and connecting to your higher meaning or your sense of purpose... All the things that play a major role in our health that are often not considered at all. As you'll learn, when primary food is balanced, our secondary food or dietary choices are more likely to align with our true needs. >> The second silo of the curriculum is nutrition and health. This content is designed to give you the basics of nutrition and the components of a healthy lifestyle. You'll hear from experts in the field, and you'll learn about everything from the role of macronutrients to how stress affects your health. >> The third major topic is coaching skills. This content is designed to teach you how to take what you're learning and apply it to being a coach. You'll learn about high-mileage questions, active listening, how to coach different personality types, and how to choose the right clients. You'll also learn techniques for both group and one-on-one coaching. >> We call the fourth category foundation and guidance. This content is designed to give you support throughout the year. You'll learn about creating intentions, setting goals, staying motivated, and walking your talk. >> And last, we have business. The business content is considered bonus, but it's weaved throughout the curriculum and is an amazing resource. You won't be tested on it and it's not required. But if you're interested in starting a coaching practice, we really recommend that you check it out. It includes topics like reaching your target market, designing your website, setting your rates, using your story to attract your clients, and utilizing social media as a marketing tool. >> Every lecture and topic has been carefully chosen by the Education Team. You are purposefully going to be exposed to a variety of teachings and schools of thought because we want to provide you with all the information you need to discover what works best for you as a bio-individual. So it's important to have an open mind and see what you connect with. >> You'll notice that some of the content is timeless, like the concept of school was started on, while some includes cutting-edge research. We're constantly updating our curriculum, so you'll get a mixture of both because we want to make sure that you have all the tools you need to be an amazing coach. There are 40 modules in total. And each module includes a mix of video lectures and PDF handouts. Once you complete the material, you'll have discussion questions, assignments, and a quiz. These activities are optional, but we definitely recommend them to make sure you're getting the full experience and learning how to put your new skills into practice. >> Everything you need for the course could be found in your Learning Center. If you want a little help, check out the orientation lecture called Navigating the Learning Center. If something is still confusing, you can always reach out to us through the Help Center. Our amazing Student Success team is here to support you throughout the year. >> We know some of you may be new to online learning and might not know what to expect, so we want to talk a little bit about what online learning is all about. First, we love this format because it allows you to take class when it's convenient for you. It gives you so much control over your education. You can listen to a lecture on the train, on vacation, or even as you're cooking dinner, or working out, something that you can't do in a traditional classroom setting. This format also gives you the flexibility to pause a lecture and come back to it if something comes up. We know you're busy, so we want to create a program that would work for everyone. Part of the benefit of the flexibility of the course is that you can listen to your body and what works for you. If you're feeling burnt out or like you need a break, it's really important to listen to that and reconnect to your body and your mind. >> One of the things that makes IIN so unique is that we incorporate mind, body, and spirit into our teachings rather than just focusing on a mental level. Not only is non-cerebral learning essential for change and transformation, we also know you'll retain information better, stress less, and feel healthier if you're really in tune with yourself throughout the course. This is something that is really important to all of us here at IIN. So to practice what we preach right now, we're going to have a quick dance break. >> No judgment. This helps get us into our bodies and out of our heads, and it's going to spark some creative energy. So take a look and join us. ["Shake It Off" playing] >> That was so much fun. I hope you enjoyed checking out our office and seeing the IIN team let loose. We know that you're heading into a year of schooling, but we want you to remember that it's okay to take the time to laugh and move. Connecting with your body through movement, any type of physical activity is one of the pillars of primary food. And it's such an important aspect of all around health. It might seem a little out of place or awkward at first, but being present in your body and shifting your energy is an awesome way to spark creativity, focus, and to get a new perspective, especially if you've been working for a while. >> Okay, before we go any further, we'd like to introduce you to the Education Team. You might even recognize some of us from the dance break. You're going to get a chance to connect with us in different ways throughout the year, but let's start with our Advanced Course Team. This team works on all of our amazing advanced courses, like the Gut Health Course and Coaching Mastery. We also have a wonderful A/V team who works behind the scenes to make sure that our video lectures and these broadcasts look their best. >> So you might not be in a classroom with your cohort. But throughout the course, like Shauna mentioned, there are some really great opportunities to connect with both us and your fellow classmates. First, if you've not already joined your class's Facebook group, you can find the link on the Connect page of the Learning Center. Your Facebook moderator Yaffa will post each week about the lectures and important things to remember and she will answer any questions you might have about the course. >> Facebook is also a great way to follow along with your classmates and network with students who live near you or have similar interests. It can also be really useful for connecting with your accountability coach. This is another student that you team up with to practice your coaching skills, and like you'd imagine, hold each other accountable. Still, it's not required. So if social media isn't your thing, it's all good. >> Another great way to connect is through your class's optional check-in calls. On the calls, we will go over important content from the last few modules, talk about things that are coming up, and essentially check in to see how everything is going with you. You can also ask us questions, and we will try to answer them right on the call. These calls are typically about 45 minutes. But if you can't make it live, you'll be able to find the recording on the Connect page of the Learning Center. >> And toward the end of the program, you'll participate in Coaching Circle calls. This is where you'll get paired with a professional coach and up to seven other classmates to practice what you're learning. On these calls, you can ask questions, get advice, see a successful coach in action, and coach others while getting immediate feedback from an expert who's also an IIN graduate. >> Bernadette, Jenna manage our Coaching Circle calls. So if you ever have a question or problem, they will be the ones to help you. Coaching Circles are actually one of your graduation requirements. You have to participate in four out of the six calls to receive your certificate. >> In order to graduate, you'll also have to submit six Health Histories. A Health History is the intro session that you'd offer a potential client to see if you'd like to work together. We'll walk you through all of this in the curriculum and show you how to conduct a Health History in Module 10. Even though only six are required for graduation, the more you do and the more you practice, the more confident you'll be when you're ready to see clients. >> Your third graduation requirement is to pass two of the four exams offered during the course. Our exams cover 10 modules at a time, and a study guide is provided before each test. You'll have two attempts to take each exam, and they're not designed to be stressful. You can reference your notes if you'd like. So as long as you're following along, you're going to do great. >> All right, so far we've covered how IIN started, and how it became a movement, how to connect with us and your classmates, and your graduation requirements, we also walked you through a quick visualization exercise to help refocus your energy and tune into your breath. >> So now we're going to go through some of the most common questions we get from incoming students. >> One of the big questions we get when students first start is, "Is it mandatory to go through the Fundamentals before we start the modules?" And the short answer is no, it's not mandatory. You're not going to be tested on any of the information there. But we have some incredible visiting teachers and some really great content that you're not going to want to miss. >> Second question, "What will my title be after I graduate?" This is a hot question for our students because they're trying to think ahead to their coaching practice and what they're going to refer themselves... To refer to themselves as. Your official title will be Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, and you'll be able to use that title freely at the end of the program. >> Another question is, "How should I stay in touch throughout the year?" So we already talked about a great way to stay in touch, and that's through Facebook. We've got moderators in there all the time to check out what's going on and to answer any questions you might have. You can also join our optional check-in calls during the year and you can ask us your questions through that. You can reach out to our amazing Student Success team at [email protected] And you're also going to get a weekly email from us to help show you what's going on during the week, any dates you need to be aware of, and important things that we're going to cover in that week's curriculum. >> Next up, "What kinds of professional jobs, apart from starting my own business, can I get as an IIN graduate?" Great question. The options here are really limitless. Think about who you are as a person and what interests you, what gets you fired up. Some of our grads take their education and they use it to improve their existing workplace. Others create new companies, they create products, maybe like their own soap line or a juice bar. Other graduates do open a coaching business, and some partner with practitioners such as a doctor's office, and they, you know, start a new career as a Health Coach with those establishments. So really, the sky is the limit and you can take your education in using any way that feels like an alliance with you. >> All right, and another question we get is, "I've heard things about an Ambassador Network. Can you tell me a little bit more about it?" So yes, of course. Now that you're a student, you are officially invited to join our Ambassador Network. Once you become an Ambassador, you'll receive $400 reward for every person you inspire to enroll in the Health Coach Training Program. Ambassadors also get access to exclusive offers, and content, tools, and resources for sharing about the school and health coaching. Best of all, you are joining a group of students and graduates who are just as passionate about health and wellness as you are. So if you know someone who would love the program or is asking you about it, go ahead and share. You can become an Ambassador and learn more about the program and the best way is to share the school at >> Each Health Coach has the potential to make a tremendous impact on their community as well as in the lives of their friends, their family, and their colleagues, plus having friends in the program just makes things way more fun. Together, you can celebrate your successes, reflect on your growth, and support each other throughout your challenges. If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected] >> And the last question that we get really frequently is, "I'm already thinking about my next step. How can I continue my education and keep my momentum going?" First off, we love this question, and we love that enthusiasm. We have lots of students who feel the same, which is why we developed a variety of advanced courses that allow you to continue your education with IIN and keep sharpening your skills. Some of the courses you might be interested in are Gut Health, Advanced Business, Launch Your Dream Book, Hormone Health, Emotional Eating Psychology, and Coaching Mastery. >> Another thing I want to make sure you know is that IIN has some really fantastic partnerships that you can take advantage of. You can actually put this program towards a degree. We have partnerships with colleges and universities around the world. So for more information, check out the Educational Partnerships Opportunities PDF on the Documents page of the Learning Center. >> So I hope that our answers were helpful and you're ready to get started this year. >> For more information about important dates throughout the year, you can refer to your Course Schedule in the Learning Center. You'll also find a comprehensive FAQ section to answer any additional questions you may still have. You can also submit questions to our Student Success team through the Help Center at any time. >> This is going to be an incredible class. And regardless of what brought you into the field, you are joining an amazing community of people who are helping to change the health and happiness of the world. >> Whatever your intention is, share it with us on Facebook and let us know how we can support you this year. We're so excited to be with you on your way to living your healthiest, happiest life. And we can't wait to see how you rock the ripple effect. >> Thank you so much for joining us. And best of luck this year. >> Before the celebration officially ends, we wanted to introduce you to your fellow classmates. Stay tuned to keep chatting on Facebook. ["Good Time" playing]
