Beyond Today: A Passion for Christ

Recently, I made a trip to Israel and toured all the normal places connected with the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ. But there was one site I visited that was off the normal tourist track. It was the remains of the ancient city of Bethsaida, just north of the famous Sea of Galilee. Bethsaida was one of the cities where Christ walked, taught and healed the sick. It was a small village and archaeologists have uncovered the town and some of its structures as it looked in Chrst's time nearly 2000 years ago. One evening, just at sunset, I walked alone through the paths of the village It was one of those moments when I was gradually aware that I was walking along a path past the remains of houses that Jesus Himself walked along in the days of His ministry. And I remember thinking, this is where He walked, this is where He taught, and in front of this house He may have stopped to talk with the people. Here, He may have healed the sick who were brought to Him on stretchers. What I had was a striking insight into the place and the events that happened here and are recorded in the Gospels. For a moment, I was able to visualize events recorded in the timeless Word of God, events that tell us about the life of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the Son of the Living God. These are the events on which we base our life, these are the events that form our faith. Everyone has a distinct image of Christ. We could say we have all created Christ in our own image. For some he is a superhero figure, larger than life that can right all wrongs and provide justice for all. Others view Christ as a revolutionary figure, challenging authority and overturning the existing order. Some view Him through the lens of compassion for the poor, the sick and the down-trodden; sort of a Father Theresa figure. Christ is a person for the ages. He is one who is worshipped, imitated and interpreted. Every generation, it seems, creates an image of Christ to fit their needs and times. Because of this, He is never fully understood. And beyond that, His teachings are never fully obeyed by those who profess to follow Him. People have all kinds of assumptions about what Jesus taught. But how many people actually know what He taught? When we live by Christ's teachings, we develop a passion for Christ that takes our life to a quality beyond anything we can imagine. It takes more than a one time experience to develop a deep passion for Christ. Ask yourself what it is that you base your belief on. Are you ready to move from observing merely a passion of Christ to having a personal passion for Christ? For Beyond Today, I'm Darris McNeeley.
