Beyond Today: What's Missing in Xmas?

0 (0 Likes / 0 Dislikes)
It's that time of year again. The season to be jolly, friends and family gathered around the Christmas tree, exchanging gifts, caroling, and eggnog. Is that really what your Christmas season has been? We don't see any Currier and Ives prints of stressed shoppers jostled by the hurried crowds. Or the car wrapped around a telephone pole by a drunk driver coming home from the office X-mas eve party. Do you find yourself longing for a lost Christmas? Has Christmas become more a time of stress and even depression than a season of happiness? What is missing in your Christmas? Christmas has been commercialized to the point that there's a great pressure to spend beyond our means. So many times, the Christian ideals which are supposedly behind the holiday get lost in the uproar. To a great extent, Christmas has been designed, packaged and marketed as a business deal. If the message of Jesus about love and treating people with decency and worshipping God -- If that's His message - then what we see when we walk into a shopping mall this time of year is a religious scam. And it really shows itself with the big "Christmas in July" sales you see during the summer. Many churches will display signs during the Christmas season stating "Jesus is the reason for the season" or "Let's put Christ back in Christmas" Now this is going to be a startling statement but it is impossible to put Christ back into Christmas and Jesus really isn't the reason for the season. Religious people make numerous attempts to connect the historical Jesus Christ with Christmas. But when you look at all the trappings of the holiday, and all the things that go into this season, there's a huge disconnect going on. A careful study of the Bible shows that Jesus wasn't born in December, excessive drinking, parties, the Christmas tree, gifts, mistletoe have no connection to Jesus Christ, His teachings or the worship activities of the New Testament Church. Historically, December 25th was an ancient pagan celebration that was amalgamated into Christianity during the time of the Roman Empire in order to get new converts. If Christmas seems like a nice holiday but in all the hustle and bustle, you feel like you're missing something, it's because you've not been observing Christmas -- but X-mas. There is a better way to honor Jesus Christ than the season of make-believe. Jesus is real. He exists in heaven at the right hand of God the Father. He wants to give you the good news of how your worship of God can be real, filled with meaning and substance, not just glitter and pretty lights. The rewards are to begin to live the way God designed for us today and to understand that He has a great future for all of us. For Beyond Today, I'm Gary Petty.
