Edgar Allan Poe - The Tell Tale Heart

It is impossible to say how the idea first entered my brain After all... I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had money as did I, so that was not the reason. "Kindness" was a word you could use often when describing him and he was always helpful around the house. But...But that did not matter as the pure sight of that abomination that lied in the socket of his skull made me mad!!! Furious to be exact!!! It was impossible to control my emotions... I had to kill him The week when it all happened, he didn't suspect a thing. I was a good friend...Even more helpful than usual... Before you call me out of my mind, could an insane person come up with a plan so clever... So perfect... Every midnight that week........ I was in his room... I snuk in... First up the stairs, slowly into his room... and then I waited, when the time was right. I slided my hand, and a thin ray of light shined upon his eye, but it was closed, so my mission was pushed to the next night. And then again... ...and again. I kept returning for 7 nights in a row, until the eighth night. You may think that I drew back...But no. His room was pitch black so the thick darkness kept me in his covering embrace. "Who's there?!" he yelled... I remained silent. For a whole hour not a single muscle in my body constrained. The room was quickly filling with the old man's heartbeats. They grew louder, louder. I resolved to open a very-very little crevice in the torch, a single dim ray... like a thread of a spider web found its way to the vultures eye... It was wide open and I grew furios as I gazed upon it. My patience broke. The old man knew his hour had come... and so it had. For many minutes the heart beat on with a muffled sound. At lenght... it ceased There was no pulsation... His eye would trouble me no more. I took up 3 planks near the chamber where the old man lived, and deposited all between the scantlings. I replaced the boards like a true craftman. When I finished, there was nothing to wash out. I had been too wary for that. My only problem was the size of the body... Dealing with that... it's...it's not quite a job for the faint-hearted. The ghastly sound a neck-snap makes puts even the toughest to tremble. The clock neared 4 A.M. when I finished... But the knocking behind the door took away my rest. It was...the police... They had information about a shriek during the night, so they wanted to search the premesis I bade the gentlemen welcome, showed them around and explained the shriek to be my own in a dream I had. I showed them everything without any fear, I even offered them drinks and something edible. Finally, I led them to the old man's chamber. They saw that everything was intact and they started chatting about daily things... They were completly pleased with everything I told them. I was singularly at ease. They sat and while I answered cheerly they chatted of familiar things. But ear long I felt myself getting pale and wished them gone. My head ached and I fancied a ringing in my ears, but still they sat and still chatted. The ringing became more distinct. I found that the noise was not within my ears. No doubt I now grew very pale, but I talked more fluently and with a hightened voice, yet the sound increased and what could I do? It was a low dull quick sound. I gasped for breath yet the officers heard it not. I talked more quickly, but the noise steadily increased. I rose and argued about trifles with violent gesticulations. Why would they not be gone? I raved. I swore. It grew louder, louder, LOUDER!! No! No! They heard! They suspected! They KNEW. They were making a mockery of my horror. "Villains!" I shrieked, "Dissemble me no more! I admit the deed. Tear up the planks. Here! Here! It's the beating of his hideous heart!!!"
