EduCamp: Una idea sobre innovación y conocimiento

An idea on innovation and knowledge. Innovation is a word that's very interesting to us and which we'd like to have more present in our environment. However, innovation is not a switch you can turn on and off. Nor we can decide at what point innovation appears [INNOVATION - online since 2009]. But what we can do with innovation is to prepare the ground so it can appear and flourish. Because innovation doesn't happen on its own, but it depends on people. On all people, but not all kinds of people. You need someone informed, connected, bold, who asks questions, who wants to change the world. You need someone who isn't just creative, but who is a creator. Nowadays we have this tool and these tools which can help us to be informed and connected, and that can even make a difference. But, how do we get everything else? This and this should be a good place to start. However, it seems that using technology in these spaces still hasn't had the effect we expected. "...expectations about the transformative value of ICT in pedagogical terms are far from being fulfilled" That's why we need to transform what happens here and here, so with the use of this tool and these tools we get a generation of creators, capable of true social, business and public innovation. I'm going to talk about an idea that can help to achieve this. And it's not only an idea, but an experiment for technology appropriation that has been carried out in several cities of Colombia: Montería, Pereira, Cartagena, Bucaramanga, Cali, Medellín, and Bogotá, with primary, secondary and higher education teachers and staff from the Ministry of Education of Colombia. This experiment, called "EduCamp", invites each participant to reflect throughout a day, about his/her personal learning environment, that is, the space [people, media, tools] in which he/she learns, and to expand it with the use of the technology tools that he/she deems necessary. This is done in an unconventional space, in which participants discover that it's possible to learn from each other, not just from experts, and that we are capable to find our own solutions to our problems. A space in which each learner learns to be autonomous. Throughout a day, participants discover a new way of understanding knowledge and learning, and explore how technology can help us to learn, to create and to interact differently with the world. At the end of the day, each person has built a network that enriches both his life and his professional practice. These are some comments from participants in the EduCamp: "I learned that we are all learners and decide our education" (Medellín, 2008) The workshops are evaluated so positively than when attendees are asked whether they would recommend it to someone else the answer is resounding [Yes]. In fact, many participants have started to replicate this experience by themselves, on a voluntary basis, in their own environments, to fit their own needs. The experience I've had with the EduCamp makes me think that if this idea is implemented in many other places, in the end it will help to strengthen the creative capacities of those who will contribute most innovation. So let's improve what is happening here and here to raise a generation of people who are engines of innovation and change, to make our planet a better place.
