Hi, my name is Kentrell Martin, and this is a presentation for my idea for a children's cartoon series! "Shelly the Interpreter" gives it's audience an introduction into American Sign Language by showing how Shelly, her family, and friends deal with normal everyday situations the show makes it easy for it's viewers to learn American Sign Language as well as traditional subjects such as the alphabet, colors, and counting. The viewer is also introduced to multiculturalism, different life styles, and languages! I hope you enjoy! Shelly, shelly is a typical 7 year old. Her first language is ASL. Shelly is smart, friendly, and a quick thinker. She is her fathers interpreter. Shelly teaches her brother Kj, his ABC's, colors, and how to count. Shelly is a great problem solver, she loves helping out others when she can. She is also very inquisitive. She has a close bond with her father and friends. Her favorite foods are: Pizza, hamburger, and fruit. She loves to teach ASL and to sing. Shelly always finds the solution to the problems. and if she can't, she asks the audience for help. Shelly helps all of her friends with their weaknesses. Dad, dad is hearing impaired. He taught both Shelly and KJ ASL. Dad has a hard time communicating with the hearing world so he relies heavily on Shelly to interpret for him. Shelly is his voice whenever they are out together or if someone comes to their home. He bags groceries at a local meat market. Everyone in town knows that he is deaf. Dad works hard to provide for his family. Who he loves very much. He is very proud of Shelly for all that she does for him. His favorite thing to do is to watch sports on t.v. KJ. Kj is Shelly's little brother. He is a typical 2 year old. He is a busy body who is always trying to get into things that he shouldn't. He can't really talk but he has a huge sign language vocabulary. Using sign language is his main method of communicating with his father and Shelly. He loves his big sister and always wants to follow her around. He looks up to his sister. Kj thinks everything is his. He is in the terrible 2 phase. Kj has a very big sign language vocabulary. Some of Kj's favorite words are: Milk, pizza, cookie, please, and I love you! Maria, Maria is Shelly's best friend. Maria is just learning English. Her parents only speak spanish. The only time that she is around english is when she is at school or around Shelly and her friends. Maria is having a hard time adjusting to english but using ASL makes it easier for her. Maria learns alot of english and sign language by hanging out with Shelly. Maria brings Spanish to the show! She not only learns from Shelly, but she also teaches Shelly and her friends spanish from time to time. Her favorite thing to do is to play soccer. Maria has a tendency to give up easily. She also lacks confidence. Kasey, Kasey is another one of Shelly's best friends. Kasey is a big jokester. Kasey has selective hearing. He makes alot of facial expressions that are funny. Kasey doesn't have many friends because kids act different towards him when they see that he wears an hearing aid in one of his ears. Kasey doensn't like being home because he is the only child and he gets lonely very easily. Kasey loves attention. He feels comfortable at Shelly's house. Kasey sometimes, uses his disability to his advantage. He loves playing football and basketball. Kasey is a sore loser and has a tendency to fabricate the truth sometimes.
