Elderly & Disabled ...in need of a voice Abuse of the elderly and disabled is much too common in today's world. As people are living longer, they are spending a significant portion of their lives in nursing homes. Elderly people and those unable to care for themselves, put their trust in others to take care of their needs and keep them safe. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Sexual abuse is quite prevalent in many nursing homes. Sexual abuse or assault is damaging no matter your age or mental capacity and everyone has the right to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and to be protected from harm. In 2005, the U.S. Government Accountability Office stated there are over 700 registered sex offenders living in nursing homes across the country. These are only the offenders for whom they have been able to keep track of. There are some 43% which are undocumented. Megan's Law, passed in 1996, is named for a child who was sexually assaulted and murdered by a convicted sex offender who lived unbeknownst to her family, across the street from her home. The law states that law enforcement have the right to inform the public of offenders who live or work in their area. If the general public receives information about sex offenders living in their neighborhood, why would the elderly and disabled not receive the same information when such a person moves into the very building in which they live? Everyone deserves safety. Everyone deserves the right to choose with whom they live. Everyone deserves the opportunity to protect themselves if they deem it necessary. Many of these nursing home patients don't have a voice. Let's give them one. If this can help protect one person from abuse or assault, it's worth it. It's worth IT.
