Science in Seconds Know Everything RUMOURS - Happiness Brit Trogen: Throughout history, biology has focused almost exclusively on negative states of the human mind. Depression, mental illness, anxiety, these all turned out to be gold mines of information in understanding how the brain works. But over the past few decades there's been a major shift: nowadays we're much more interested in the science of happiness, a topic that used to reside almost exclusively in the realm of philosophy, and occasionally marketing. But according to the biology, your chronic happiness level boils down to three things: happiness relevant circumstances like income; your personal activities, like exercise and diet; and lastly, a factor that counts for up to 50% of your happiness potential: your genetic disposition to happiness. That's right, your genes. New research indicates that at birth the level of happiness you obtain in life is already halfway decided. It may sound far-fetched, but consider the fact that neurotransmitters like dopamine course through your brain when you're experiencing positive emotions. If you naturally have more of them, who's to say that you won't laugh, smile, and feel good more often? Which came first, the smile or the serotonin reuptake inhibitor? It's at this point that every scientist in the world starts thinking the same thing: it's so simple, just make a drug that stimulates the happy chemical receptors! Well, sadly someone beat us to it. Cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, most of the popular ones are already do this. And of course, there are a few pesky side effects, like addiction and cardiac arrest, to worry about. So I guess when it comes to happiness, no matter how you look at it, it's all in your head. Courtesy of Science in Seconds – All rights reserved
