Science in Seconds - Water purification

Science in Seconds Know Everything RAVES - Water Purification Rheanna Sand: Water is the most important resource on the planet, and a bit of a paradox: it's everywhere, and yet not accessible to the people who need it most. Typically, water that is available isn't safe to drink. It must be boiled to kill biological contaminants, then run through activated carbon or other expensive filters to remove the particulates. However, there's a new amazing invention that does all of this in one bottle. The bottle uses nano materials to filter all particles larger than 50 nanometers, which includes parasites, bacteria and even most viruses. It can be filled from any angle, and produces drinkable water just by pumping. The larger bottles can process up to 6,000 liters of water (that's the equivalent of 6,000 one-liter bottles!) and have a fail-safe mechanism that prevents the pump from working, once the filter is no longer functioning. The obvious question brimming in your minds is of course, "Can you use it to drink your own urine?" According to the manufacturers' website, the answer is yes. But they suggest trying to find other sources of water first. And you can't do it more than four times in a row as the salt would become too concentrated and you'll die from dehydration or embarrassment. All kidding aside, this invention could change the developing world, if it was made widely and cheaply available. As for now, it seems to be marketed to military personnel and outdoor adventurers, in other words those who don't really need it. But with the technological hurdle overcome, it can't be long for the moral imperative to kick in, I hope.
