Science in Seconds - Circumscise for AIDS

Science in Seconds Know Everything RUMOURS - Circumscise For AIDS Torah Kachur: If only someone could find the cure for AIDS! At least we can prevent it by using condoms. Oh right, except certain religions and countries refuse to allow their charity to be spent on condom promotion. We're left with other options for preventing HIV infection, like cutting penises off. Adult male circumcision is, apparently, very painful and risky. Wimps. The evidence supporting it as a prevention for HIV infection is limited, but promising. Studies have shown that adult males who are cut are anywhere from 2-9 times less likely to contract HIV. In areas of Africa where circumcision is commonly part of a cultural practice, the AIDS rate is lower than those areas where circumcision is rare. But there is also conflicting evidence, slowing the rush for a little nip and tuck. Most American men don't have foreskin, and yet the US has the highest AIDS rate in the developed world. Similarly, other studies in Africa have found that circumcision and AIDS rates are not at all related. But so far, most studies have shown that putting his precious loins under the knife can reduce lifelong and deadly HIV infections. The logic is pretty simple: during intercourse the male foreskin is stretched and pulled, creating small cuts and lesions. These cuts provide a route for HIV infection. If you take away the passage into the blood, the HIV cannot infect. But (and this is a BIG but) if male circumcision works it will only prevent female-to-male infection. It has no effect on male-to-female or male-to-male transmission. So it is up to the guys to cut off some of their "Johnson" to make sure they aren't infected. Cut your penis off or wear a condom?
