I believe in... just One thing

My "I believe" statement at UUCA,VA, 3/27/10. (CC-by-sa Jaakko Helleranta) So, the big question: What do "I believe"? I have thought about this question a lot in the recent years. In my quest to find my life's passion and purpose, as well as to figure out what I believe in I have made quite a number of lists. Here's a glimpse into them to give you an idea of what I've come up with: I believe in kindness, forgiveness, friendship, and connecting with people; I believe in vibrant, tolerant communities, and in participating in and contributing to one's communities. I believe in living mindfully and frugally; in connecting with mother earth. I believe in the power of awareness, meditation and the importance of a personal spiritual path. Just as much, I believe in justice, equality, compassion, respect and acceptance of others just as they are -- and oneself! ... I believe in freedom, healthy democracy, and non-violence. I also believe that these can not be achieved unless we act and encourage others to act towards these goals and ideals. And we need to be quite fearless to do all of this, even parts of it. As I continued thinking what I really believe in, deep down, at the bottom of everything, I realized that there is One simple thing that drives towards all of this - and more: LOVE. Doing my rigorous literature review on the topic I found out to my surprise that I'm not the first one to have realized this. Among many others, Niccolò Machiavelli wrote almost exactly 500 years ago that: "Men are driven by two principal impulses, either by love or by fear" and "Since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved". So, I think I’m onto something here… Safer or not, I BELIEVE IN LOVE. The more I have allowed myself to digest it, the clearer I have understood that while it is often compelling to fear various things -- if not anything and everything -- Love is The foundation of everything that helps us enjoy our lives, live in harmony with others, and grow spiritually … and that everything else follows. And, that’s what “I believe”. What I feel, is that Unitarian Universalism and UUCA have given me a wonderful spiritual community and home to practice my belief and faith. So thank you!
