Science in Seconds - Moms are awesome

Science in Seconds Know Everything RAVES - Moms Are Awesome Torah Kachur: Moms are awesome. They kiss your boo-boos better, support you when you succeed and never talk about the day you were conceived. If they're so awesome, might as well have two. Biologically, everyone on the planet has one mother, the one whose egg was serendipitously fertilized by your baby daddy. But new advances in fertility treatments are pushing the boundaries of the simple labels, "Mom" and "Dad." Surrogate mothers, egg donors, and now a new addition to the list, nuclear mothers and mitochondrial mothers. Your cells contain two sources of DNA. Almost all of it is housed in the nucleus, but a very small piece of DNA is in a different room, or organelle, in your cell: the mitochondria. This little compartment is only inherited from your mother, and because it has some DNA, can also be the source of hereditary diseases. New technologies are trying to cure mitochondrially inherited diseases by using two different biological mothers: one to supply the nuclear DNA, that determines much of who you are, and then another egg, to supply functioning mitochondria. So, if you take the nucleus from your true mother and remove it to implant it into your second mother's egg, that contains healthy mitochondria, then you get an in-vitro fertilized embryo with two moms. And to make it more complicated, this embryo could be implanted into a surrogate, leaving you with three moms. That leaves you three times the people to disappoint. But all of this still needs some dude to jerk off into a cup. Courtesy of Science in Seconds – All rights reserved Only for educational/non-profit purposes.
