Vandana Shiva: The Future of Food-Part 1

Bringing a people behind our food to life. The myth of Genetic engineering has been put out of terms of saying: "This is solution for hunger." It is totally false myth. Because only two applications that have been commercialized in these 20 years of Genetic engineering: one is to make seeds more resilient to herbicide, witch means you get to spread more Roundup (herbicide). You get to spread more glucoside, and you get to spread more poison. Not a very desirable trade in farming systems. A Specially since what Monsanto will call weeds are actually alternative source of food. For example in India Monsanto had Adds selling Roundup with weeds around woman's hands saying: "Liberate yourself". But what Monsanto calls weeds is: food for cattle, its greens for the family, its medicinal plants. The spring of Roundup is like a ecocide of the planet destroying biodiversity. The other brand of Genetic engineering is BT toxin crops. You take Genetically engineered toxin from a bacteria called Bacillus thuringiensis, witch is way a BT, put it into the plant, and now the stock is in ready-made toxin different from bacteria where it becomes a toxin in the gut particular insects, and therefore only targets the caterpillars. This ready-made toxin now starts to think butterflies and bees, a Cornell study showed that butterflies fed with pollen from BT corn had a much higher level of mortality. We just done a recent study that showing that soils with BT cotton have lost nearly 30% off the soil microorganism in 3 years of cultivation. There are reports in India of cattle dying after grazing on BT cotton fields. Because after all its a toxin. And this is happening to animals and bees. What`s going to happen to human beings with a lifetime of feeding this toxic foods? There is also talk about producing more nutrition. A Golden rice is talked about a lot. Well Golden rice has 30mg of vitamin E equivalent, real sources of vitamin E are greens. For example the coriander leaf that we use in our curry's, or the curry leaf.. they have 1400mg, so 74% reduction in vitamin E is sold as a increased availability of vitamin E? These are illusions that been marketed in order for people to hand over the power to decide what we eat to hand of corporations. This is not been done to improve food supply, or to improve food nutrition, its been done to control food. Because without Genetic engineering companies could not have patented seed. A seed patent means the right to exclude anyone from making, using, saving and developing the patented product. If its a machine it doesn't matter. If its a aeroplane it doesn't matter. Boeing makes aeroplane, a local citizen does not. But when it comes to seed if Monsanto gets patten right to seed then a farmer saving seed is treated like a thief. An intellectual property thief. A farmer whose field is decontaminated by GMO seed that Monsanto has sold, through pollination or wind that farmer who is victim of pollution is also treated like a thief because when seed becomes intellectual property the existence of GMO trades anywhere without the patten holders permission is treated like a theft. This is how Percy Schmeiser in Canada where sued for 200.000,00$. A 1500 of USA have been sued by Monsanto after Monsanto contaminated their crops. This is pitching the principal of the polluter base into principal of the polluter gets paid. So Monsanto has control of the seed through patents and the control of the rest of the food through contamination. Its a very perverse situation. It has to change. Its non sustainable, its unjust, its immoral, and the fact that they got away with it for a 20 years should be no reason why they get away with it for next 20 years.

This 3-part series of interviews with Dr. Vandana Shiva about the future of food is one of the most contentious, revolutionary, profound, and important discussions of any, we have had to date on Food News. This is more than about the safety of biotechnology; its about the ability of all of us to have a choice of the foods that we eat, and for our farmers to be able to freely use their own seeds, and grow food in the manner that they choose.
