Introducing: Google earth engine Ask the average person for the biggest cause of Global Warming and chances are they won't say trees. But in fact tropical deforestation the loss of the healthy forests that absorb carbon dioxide accounts for more greenhouse gas build up than all the cars, and planes and other vehicles in the world combined. Today, there's a growing consensus in favor of protecting the world's forests But for these sustainability projects to succeed tropical nations have to be able to accurately observe and report on the changing state of their forests, often in remote parts of the world. Every day, earth-orbiting satellites gather incredible amounts of environmental data but storing and publishing this information is an enormous task. And, as a result, much of this is never seen by the people who need it most. That's why we built Google Earth Engine. Earth Engine is an online environmental monitoring platform that makes available to the entire world a dynamic digital model of our planet, updated daily. We started by publishing online, for the first time, the complete archive of more than 25 years of historical land site imagery of the planet's tropical regions. This archive gives dozens of countries access to the most current data about their forests. Earth Engine also gives scientists and officials high performance tools to analyze and interpret detailed environmental data. From rainforest changes in the Amazon, to water resources in the Congo. Calculations that used to take hours or days to perform, can now be done in minutes or seconds. Earth Engine is also empowering local communities in the developing world: the indigenous SuruĂ tribe, in the Brazilian Amazon, for instance, is using satellite imagery in combination with smartphones to monitor and protect their rainforest. Think of Google Earth Engine as an environmental watch-program in which everyone can participate: local citizens, governments, scientists, donors, the media, anyone who is interested in what's happening to the natural world. The work matters: today's environmental challenges are complex and daunting. And we all have to do our part to meet them. To that end, we will continue developing this platform, adding more data, more tools, and new applications. We hope that over time Google Earth Engine will help reduce tropical deforestation, empower developing nations and local communities, and contribute to a more informed understanding of our planet.
