UNIT 8 - Technology and L2 methods

Technology and L2 methods The technological advances in Western societies in the 20th century have exerted a great influence upon the different methodologies used for the teaching of second or foreign languages. Technology, or rather educational technology, has greatly influenced the processes of acquiring, teaching and learning second and foreign languages. The expansion of the study of foreign languages in the USA and consequently the development of one of the most influential methods in history, the Audio-Oral or Audio Lingual, was designed after the so-called “Sputnik crisis” in 1957. The launch of the world's first artificial satellite, just the size of a basketball, shook America and established a new order urging deep political, military, scientific, and indeed technological developments. As Stern (1983) states: “the expansion of foreign language education in the U.S.A. […] was prompted by the view that the technological advance of the Soviet Union was made possible by the superiority of Soviet education in foreign languages. This interpretation […] was probably exaggerated and may even have been quite false but it profoundly influenced language teaching in the U.S.A.” The Audiovisual Method, developed in the 50s in France, similar in its theory of learning to audiolingualism, used recorded dialogues with film-strip picture sequences to present language items. The filmstrip and tape presentation of lessons provided an audio-visual scenario which was meant to stimulate the social context in which language is used and where the learners became familiar with everyday language. Coincidental with the development of multimedia (nowadays a synonymous with computer) were the changes in the interpretation of the process of languages teaching and learning. Communicative Language Teaching, Topic-Driven Learning and Task-Based Learning are among the approaches heightened by the use of personal computers.
