Every facility providing maternity services and care for newborn infant should:
Step 5 Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they should be separated from their infants.
Dr. Raj K. Anand: When the baby has to be separated from the mother for a specific medical reason the fifth step shows the mother how to maintain lactation by expression of breast milk. Or, to help her visit the baby in the intensive care as often as possible.
All nurses know, and demonstrate correct attachment and position.
All nurses know, and demonstrate expression of breast milk, correctly.
Majority of mothers know, and demonstrate, correct attachment and positioning.
Majority of mothers know, and demonstrate expression, correctly.
Mothers of babies who are transferred to neo-natal intensive care unit are given help to start expression, soon after delivery. Such mothers are transferred to be with their babies as soon as possible.
