Workstyle Freestyle 015 - 'Presenteeism'

Ah, is someone working here?
No I think that one's free, I think they just left their coat on it...
I didn't see anyone.
What about yours?
Well... I think my husband was working there...
I think he was working there last week and he wants to look like he's still working there, for everyone on the video.
So I think he's just left his coat on his chair to make it look like he's working.
Right, so he still gets paid, on the assumption he's still working...?
Yea, it just looks like it for everyone else who's watching the video.
Oh, right.
Yea.
Is it a bit of a 'coat on chair' culture in your house, is it?
Ha, that's right!
Hello Hoxbies!
Welcome to Workstyle Freestyle!
With me, Alex Hirst.
And with me, Lizzie Penny.
Guess what?! We're talking about presenteeism. It's the 'coat on a chair' mentality.
Yea, presenteeism...
- We do NOT like presenteeism.
We are not big fans, are we?
We are NOT fans of presenteeism.
We did a survey not long ago and found that 75 percent of people
who worked in a traditional environment,
felt that they were, they felt that presenteeism was a cultural thing
and an expectation that was put upon them.
What is presenteeism?
So presenteeism is almost like the unspoken need to be present
and kind of 'visible', in order to be deemed to be making a valuable contribution.
And the longer you are there, the more visible you are, the longer you are 'seen' to be working, the more you're contributing.
You're basically judged on your time at your desk, rather than being judged on the output.
Which is the complete opposite of Hoxby.
It's madness, madness.
It's the 'don't leave until your boss is gone'
or if you've gone, make sure you keep your coat on the back of your chair so then they think you're still working...
Mind you, that doesn't really wash at Hoxby does it,
because no one really knows if you've got your coat on your chair, except the people you live with, perhaps.
I never even put my coat on...
So we believe in being judged on your output, and a true meritocracy
and presenteeism is craziness, and we just don't like it.
See you later, presenteeism.
Thanks for tuning in, we've been Workstyle Freestyle
See you next week!
Bye!
