UNIT 2 - Listening, speaking, reading and writing: The four skills

0 (0 Likes / 0 Dislikes)
The goal of communicative language teaching is the development of the so called four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Listening and reading are considered as receptive skills, speaking and writing are considered as productive. Receptive skills help students get information as the input of language, while productive skills make language output possible and require sufficient language input as their basis. In our everyday life, there are many situations in which we use more than one language skill to communicate. Integrating the four skills emphasizes the focus on realistic language and leads to the students’ global development of communicative competence, the ultimate goal of foreign language learning which includes both the knowledge about the language and the knowledge about how to use the language appropriately in communicative situations. Besides this division as receptive and productive, another division focuses on one-way reception and interactive reception. Reading and writing are one-way skills where learners don’t get direct feedback, while in speaking and listening learners may have their understanding and reproduction checked instantly. Listening, as well as reading, is categorized as a “passive” skill because linguists believe that a listener is involved in guessing, anticipating, checking, interpreting, interacting and organizing by associating and accommodating his or her prior knowledge of meaning and form. As a receptive skill, listening differs greatly with reading as the learners are required to interact with the next sentence using the knowledge of the previous one. Listening involves continuous material presentation where learners have to respond to the immediate expression. From the view point of “product” or “process”, listening is more a process than a product which instantly shapes the understanding and utterances of the learners.
