'I wait for the Lord with my longing, I put my hope in his word. My soul waits for the Lord more eagerly than the night watch for the morning, like those who watch for the morning.' I wonder if you find yourself awake at night, what do you do? Counting one to a hundred has never worked for me. I reckon if I suddenly wake up at night the Holy Spirit wants me to spend time with him. So that's what I try to do. During my camp in a tent twice in York Minster, praying on the hour every hour, during the night I was like those keeping a military or a shepherd's watch during the darkest hours before dawn, eagerly awaiting the security of the morning. Sometimes when praying it isn't a matter of saying a lot, it is just waiting in stillness to join the intercessory prayer of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit being aware of the God the Father's presence, who is closer to me than the sound of my breathing. I wait for God, wait for what words and images that may come to mind, or in the absence of anything in particular for that overwhelming sense of God's present goodness and grace. Sometimes when I've been tempted to work out an answer for a particular situation, it is in this quiet waiting that I've found reasons to be hopeful and trusting again and again It's amazing how often this happens. It's not just that I'm a glass-half-full kind of disciple of Jesus Christ, it is that God speaks to my soul words of assurance, so that I know whatever the future holds in any situation, I know God has it in hand. As the song goes, why are we waiting? I'm often longing for the morning. The night seems to go on forever. I want to be up and about. So I often come down here, to the chapel, and pray. Actually I can't wait to see what God will do next. The Psalmist says, 'Heaviness may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning. The waiting and the praying are a vital preparation for discerning what God wants us to do next. If we don't wait and pray, we may never see, we may never know what God is doing or what he is giving to us or asking of us. So if in doubt, wait and see. As Psalm 62 verse one says: 'For God alone I wait silently. My deliverance comes from him.'
