First view of the Earth from the moon. Aug. 23, 1966 For the first time, we saw our Earth as one. Now, for the first time, we can communicate across our cultures as one. The Earth Charter: Values & Principle for a Sustainable Future Presented by iEARN students in 20 Countries This video is the first to be translated into 100 languages. Designed and powered by dotSUB. On June 29, 2000, the Earth Charter Commission formally launched the Earth Charter at the Peace Palace in The Hague. The Earth Charter is an international declaration of fundamental values and principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society. There has never before been a document which is the culmination of such international diversity, inclusion, and cooperation. The Earth Charter Preamble We stand at a critical moment in Earth's history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations. The Earth Charter consists of 16 principles categorized into 4 areas: (I) Respect and Care for the Community of Life, (II) Ecological Integrity, (III) Social and Economic Justice, (IV) Democracy, Nonviolence, and Peace. Let ours be a time remembered for the awakening of a new reverence for life, the firm resolve to achieve sustainability, the quickening of the struggle for justice and peace, and the joyful celebration of life.
