Leadership Straight from Bill Hybels Volunteerism In the US now, for young leaders who are building the new wave kind of churches if you pull the curtain back and ask them, how important are volunteers to the vision of this cool new church you are going to build? If they told you the truth they would say, they would like to build their new church with as few volunteers involved as possible. Because they require a lot of nurture. They require a lot of training and hand holding. They want to hire staff and mainly build this new cool church with staff and not mess with volunteers. When I talk to a young pastor like that it is like "hold me back!" Because there are all of these thoughts that go through my mind. The first one would be the Ephesians 4 thought. It is the job of a pastor to fire up, equip, train and inspire every church member to be a minister in the church. It is not biblical to try and build a church without volunteers. Secondly, I think it is pastoral malpractice. In other words, the senior pastor will stand before God some day and say "I did not take your word seriously when it comes to helping all the people in my church find their spiritual gift and use it." I think it is a reflection on the senior pastor's theology. Third, I know this from Willow Creek where we hold a very high volunteer value, what keeps pastors going so often is that thrill of God using your life. You know what that is like to give a sermon occasionally that works well. You drive home and you know some lives changed and you say "God used me." You know that is a thrill. And the way God designed the whole body of Christ is that when you find your spiritual gift, like Mark's are teaching and leadership, and you use is for God's glory you feel the thrill of God using your life to move something ahead. That is for the whole church not just for the staff.
