[Al & Laurine Volkmann] [Al Volkmann] These cards and letters that we'd received, they came from all over.
Some people we knew, some people we didn't know.
One of the letters was from a French teacher I had in high school who remembered me.
She is well into her 80s now, and she wrote me a letter saying that,
"I remember you as a young French student in my class."
"I was so saddened to hear about what happened to you." Just a lovely letter.
So many people just out of the blue, they wrote letters, they sent cards,
because we received our share of that,
but our daughter received probably 10 times more than we received.
The outpouring of grief was incredible.
And I'll tell you something, I for one found that very humbling and comforting as well
because it was an indication of the fact that, yes, there might have been one bad person who did a bad and terrible thing
which affected other people, but there are hundreds of thousands of other people
who have love in their heart and who really feel very compassionate and sympathetic
to the ones who have suffered this loss.
