Where we read from Chapter 4 beginning with Verse 16: AT MY FIRST DEFENSE, NO ONE CAME TO MY SUPPORT, BUT EVERYONE DESERTED ME. MAY IT NOT BE HELD AGAINST THEM. BUT THE LORD STOOD AT MY SIDE AND GAVE ME STRENGTH, SO THAT THROUGH ME THE MESSAGE MIGHT BE FULLY PROCLAIMED AND ALL THE GENTILES MIGHT HEAR IT. AND I WAS DELIVERED FROM THE LION'S MOUTH. THE LORD WILL RESCUE ME FROM EVERY EVIL ATTACK AND WILL BRING ME SAFELY TO HIS HEAVENLY KINGDOM. TO HIM BE GLORY FOR EVER AND EVER. AMEN. This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray: This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Amen. Sermon text: 2 Timothy 4:16-18 [Text taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION, 1973, 1978, 1984, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.] Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Just imagine you're in your house ... your home ... going about your everyday routine when all of a sudden there is an explosion and the sound of a jet engine coming at your house. And you look out the window and all you see is a wall of flame destroying everything in its path. It could happen. Imagine you wake up one morning, and you realize that the tropical storm that was heading your way is now a hurricane and you're in the direct path. It could happen. Imagine that you're at your son's high school football game. He's the star quarterback. You've got great plans for him. It's his senior year. There are colleges beating down your door to have him. You watch him throw the greatest touchdown pass of the game. All eyes on the end zone and you turn back and your son is on the field ... dead. It could happen. All of those stories come out of the news of the past few days. The world in which we live is not always a nice place. But yet somehow we, as human beings, think that that nice place should always be surrounding us. We should always be the ones who are safe and exempt from gas lines exploding. From the events of nature rattling and shaking our earth or dumping down gallons of water on our head. We go through life thinking we are the people that are not going to have death enter our life when we don't want it there. And, yet, if we open our eyes and look around we see that evil is everywhere we turn. It's in our homes. It's in our workplaces. It's everywhere that we go. It's a common fact of life ... since Adam and Eve took that fruit and ate it and forever changed the course of history. But thanks be to God that He came into this world with a plan. A plan to rescue humanity. A plan to save people. A plan to put an end to the evil that is so prevalent in each of our days. And we remind ourselves today that: To Him be the glory for delivering us from evil. For He is the One who will always stand by us. He is the One who is going to take us safely Home. He is the One who showers His love on humanity even when He came to them reminding them that they had sinned. He drove a wedge between Satan and Eve. He promised that the children of Satan, the unbelievers, would always be at odds with the descendants of Eve, the believers. That they would be at war with each other. That it would be difficult for them. And yet He reminded them all that One of those descendants of Eve would come and be the Savior of humanity that would CRUSH the serpent's head denoting a total victory in spite of the fact that that serpent had bitten Him on the heel. But we know that that death of Christ was there for the payment of our sins. And that that grave in which He was placed could not hold Him! In power and in strength and in victory, He rose from the dead! HE IS OUR LIVING GOD who is with us always! He made that assurance to His disciples before He was lifted from this earth reminding them that He was going to come back just as He left. They're reminded they're to go and do their work and that He would be with them always to the very end of the age. And whenever we, as the disciples of Christ, heed that Call to go and make disciples, to live out our life of faith, Satan and all of his followers, and all of the evil that he promotes in this world, is going to come upon us. He tried to destroy our Lord and Savior. He is going to do the same to us and whoever proclaims that Gospel in their life by their actions and their words ... stands in his way. The Apostle Paul was one of those people. He had been called by the Church to proclaim to the Gentiles the wonderful news that God lives. That God saves and forgives and He is with people always. And the Apostle Paul was put in jail for that. And when he stood before kings ... when he stood before judges, Paul reminded Timothy that he went there the first time alone. Nobody stood there with him. And he prayed that people wouldn't hold that against those people. Reminiscent of our own Lord and Savior, wasn't it? But when he was arrested, the disciples all fled! I'm sure that Timothy felt that way in his own life at times. That he was alone. Just as you and I also feel that sometimes we're the only Christians on the face of the earth. That we're the only ones standing up for what is right and standing up for the truth and proclaiming Christ. That there is no one around us. That's human nature. That's Satan's biggest lie that he has used for all time! He used them with the Prophet Elijah. It was to the point where Elijah fell down and said: I just wanna die. I'm the only one left. Because Satan wants us to be robbed of the knowledge that our God is alive and that He stands with us. That he is ALWAYS at our side. That He is always with us. That that myriad of angels that He has at His disposable as His spiritual warfare are on our side and are protecting us as well. There are more of those who are for us than there will ever be of those who are against us because we stand in the strength of the almighty and all-powerful God. We stand with the backup of that heavenly army that Jesus can dispose at His command to protect us and to keep us safe. We are reminded that GOD WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US because HE KEEPS HIS WORD TO US! And we have that strength and that knowledge and that courage in our lives even when we think we're alone. Even when we think it's the greatest and the worst disaster that we could ever face and even when it's hard and when it's difficult. Because isn't that what we usually come back to in our sinful lives? I would do it, but it's just too hard. I don't wanna take the time right now. Or, this couldn't happen at a more worse time in my life than right now. Imagine Joseph's surprise when the angel came to him and said: Get up and go to Egypt. Take that young Child that you have and your wife and get out of here because Herod wants Him dead. Do you think at that time Joseph sat down with Mary and the two of them said: Oh woe! He's rather young. You know it's really a long way to Egypt. Oh! Maybe we could wait until tomorrow or next week. You know I don't know how we're gonna do this. Whatta we gonna do when we get there? Joseph took the mother, took the Child, and went off to Egypt doing what the Lord commanded. And what a reminder to us in our life to stop putting up the obstacles to BEING children of God! To stand on our feet of faith and to do what God has said ... when God said it. Not waiting for tomorrow when there's more time or when it's gonna be easier for us because it's never is going to be easier. Evil is never convenient. Sin never comes in when we want it to come in. It's always there, always attacking. But we stand in this world with our heavenly Father. And we wait and long for that day when Jesus is going to come and take us out of this world and deliver us from all evil. When we no longer have to be confined to these sinful bodies prone to decay, suffering sickness and diseases. When we no longer have to struggle with the evil that is around us. And how it affects our lives at every moment. But we know with faith and certainty that Jesus IS our Lord and Savior. That we are His. That He is going to come and take us to be with Him. That beautiful picture of Judgment Day that we heard this morning again from John's Revelation ... the new heaven, the new earth, prepared as a beautiful bride. Prepared as the Holy City coming down out of heaven without sin and without stain to be with God. No more mourning. No more crying. No more death. No more sorrow. No more tears. But joy! And everlasting righteousness in the presence of God. THAT is what is our goal! NOT some kind of perfect easy peaceful life in this world. But ETERNAL life with God! And we don't trade that future for anything. We hold onto it with all of our strength by the power of the Holy Spirit. Each day we live in the faith that walks closer to that end. Each day we struggle with the knowledge that someday we will no longer struggle because we won't be here. Because the God who has been with us always, has come to take us to be with Him always. And for that, we rejoice! For that we raise our voices to God in praise and say: To God be the glory! Because He does not leave us as orphans in this world. He does not leave us without hope. He does not leave us without strength. But He is with us. He guides us. He loves us each and every day and is going to take us to be with Him in heaven. With the Apostle Paul we hear that encouragement to Timothy: We hear that encouragement for us today. To realize that the struggles are always going to be there. There are going to be fires that destroy homes. Friends and loved ones we know are going to die. There are going to be disasters that affect all of our lives. It IS a part of living in this world. But thanks be to God we don't stand alone. We stand with the almighty, all-powerful God. We know He is with us always. We also know that someday, we will be with Him forever. To Him be glory and power and strength and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Let us rise. Now may the peace of God which goes beyond all of our understanding, keep your hearts and your minds and especially your lives, in the one true faith unto life everlasting. Amen.
