Today on 'In The Closet' we chat with scientist and home sewer Dr. Collette Bromhead.
Collette loves being able to create unique clothes that fit well using mainly natural fabrics such as linen, merino wool, and organic cotton. She sources new, end-of-line (deadstock) and upcycled fabric from The Fabric Store and Miss Maude as well as local Fabricabrac events and various secondhand stores.
Her criteria are that the fabrics feel good, are easy-care (preferably low to no ironing!), hardwearing, sustainable, compostable and budget-friendly.
Collette favours independent pattern designers including True Bias, Closet Case Patterns, Jennifer Lauren Vintage, Merchant and Mills, Megan Nielsen, Wiksten, Deer and Doe, Named, Paper Theory and Tessuti Patterns. Sewing clothes for her ever-evolving style as well as her family gives Collette a feeling of creative joy and balance.
Sewing provides the perfect creative foil to her day-job as a senior lecturer in molecular microbiology at Massey University where she is known as the “Queen of Chlamydia, the Goddess of Gonorrhea and the High Priestess of Human Papillomavirus”.
Collette has a passion for quality science communication and loves teaching her Health Science students. She has held multiple research, policy and technical roles with District Health Boards and the Ministry of Health, latterly advising on the implementation of HPV Primary Screening for Cervical Cancer.
