Introduction to Back2Back India

India, officially known as the Republic of India, became an independent nation in 1947 after nearly ninety years under British rule. Taking up a vast portion of Southern Asia, India holds the second largest population count in the world at approximately 1.3 billion people and is a country of great diversity –from terrain to language. India holds one of the world’s oldest forms of surviving class structures with its Caste System. Although outlawed in 1950, the 3,000-year old Caste System remains ingrained within the culture for a variety of reasons. In the midst of these tensions and country-wide poverty – 70% of people live on less than $4 a day– the culture embraces hospitality beautifully and its celebrations remain vibrant and memorable. Back2Back began working in Hyderabad, India in 2008 through partnerships with local children’s homes. In the summer of 2014, Back2Back India’s Suzuki Samuel Hope Campus was officially opened. The Back2Back-owned campus is home to spacious, family-care based housing. Boys and girls, ages 5 to 16, live and learn daily as family – looking out for each other and playing as siblings. Each home houses a maximum of ten children who are cared for by two caregivers. A one to five ratio for the children provides individualized and personalized care – fostering an environment of safety and growth. In addition to a brief stay in the city in order to serve children in one of the slum communities, mission guests are afforded the unique opportunity to stay on the same campus the children live on when they visit. On any given evening, following a day at the school they each attend, the children can be found playing a game of cricket in the large yard of the campus. A basketball court and badminton net offers opportunities for team play and a soccer ball is never far from reach. Spiritual, physical, educational, emotional, and social needs are met daily for each child Back2Back serves. Weekly Bible classes and Sunday church services bring the children together, drawing them nearer to a loving God. Each child is provided their own bed and dresser for their personal items. An open campus to run within and nutritious meals ensure each child is rested and equipped for the days ahead. High-quality, consistent education is provided for each boy and girl. The majority of their classes are taught in English - better preparing them for future occupations. Regular visits with a psychologist, developing relationships with sponsors, and compassionate caregivers and staff create solid foundations for emotional and social growth. As each child grows in an environment in which they are cared for and afforded opportunity, they each begin to understand that, while trauma may be a part of their history, it is not what defines them. As Back2Back continues to serve the orphaned and vulnerable in India, they are continually developing relationships in nearby villages – ministering to families and local feeding centers to share the love of Christ and develop a Strong Families Program. The Strong Families Program pursues each family they work alongside with the goal of keeping families together. As Back2Back India grows each child served comes to understand they are seen and known, uniquely individual, and wholly loved by the staff caring for them and a God who is writing their story. Back2Back, through collaboration with other like-minded partners and Indian nationals caring for their own, along with mission guests and faithful sponsors, is committed to providing deep, holistic care for orphaned and vulnerable children in India. Offering care for today and hope for tomorrow, we never lose sight of the vision each child will become dependent on Jesus – a devoted follower of Christ, interdependent in their community – a good citizen and neighbor, and an independent adult – able to care for themselves and their family. Back2Back will be faithful to the children and families of India as they build the future of their beautiful and vibrant country.
