I'm excited to be joining you in this module
to explore the psychology of emotional eating.
You've learned a lot in this course already
about emotional eating
and there's much more content to come.
But in this module, we're going to deviate
and dive deep into one specific food
and its effects on emotional eating.
And that's because everywhere you turn today,
you hear the buzz about sugar.
My story is that I lost 52 pounds in 52 weeks when I was 52
by conquering my lifelong sugar addiction.
Quite a transformation, right?
And this is something many of our clients
aspire to do as well.
I had been chubby my entire life.
I tried every diet in the books starting at the age of 14.
Sometimes I was successful
because I'm good at following rules
for short periods of time,
but I always gained back what I lost
and then some when I stopped following
the externally imposed rules.
At some level,
I knew I was self-medicating emotions with food.
But it wasn't until the day
an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach
gave a sugar blues workshop where I work
that the light bulb went off.
I was using sugar as a security blanket.
I committed to cutting out all added sugar
and started walking an hour a day.
The weight dropped off steadily a pound a week for a year.
At the end of the year,
that was 52 pounds, which really added up.
And at the same time, the weight was dropping
so too did the need to self-medicate.
Taking out the sugar, a secondary food,
and adding in walking, a primary food,
stabilized my emotions,
so the need to self medicate was gone.
Now almost 12 years later, the weight has stayed off,
which is almost a miracle.
Did you know that less than 5% of the people
who lose more than 30 pounds keep it off more than a year?
And I attribute this success to learning
how to manage my emotions without sugar.
Once I lost the weight, I enrolled in IIN
and became a Health Coach myself.
Then when the Launch Your Dream Book course was announced,
I knew I had a story to tell.
And that's when my book Simply Sugar Free was born.
For the past 10 years,
I have dedicated myself to researching
and helping people apply simple steps
to conquer sugar addiction.
Throughout this module,
I'll share with you what I've learned personally
and through my work with others,
hopefully, at a level of detail
that gives you credibility with your clients
but that doesn't leave you or them
with your eyes glazed over.
Although the relationship between sugar and emotional eating
can be very complex,
there are simple coaching steps
that I'll share with you here in this module.
