France is situated in the western part of Europe and is bordered by Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy Spain and two little countries: Monaco and Andorra. France, the largest country in Western Europe is a land of superlatives. On the eastern borderline’s Mount Blanc is the tallest mountain in Western Europe and the pinnacle of the Alps. It is home some of Europe’s famous ski resorts. In the south-east there is France’s ‘Grand Canyon’ - the Gorges du Verdon –. With its 2000 feet it is Europe’s deepest chasm and 1,500 climbing routes are waiting for the climbers. Along France’s southern border with Spain the Pyrenees are much older than the Alps, but they’re famous for their high-mountain-paths. It gives perfect ground for one of France's famous sporting passions, cycling. Every year the Tour de France passes through the Pyrenees. France has extensive river systems such as the Seine, the Loire, the Garonne, and the Rhone. Big cities were built inshore. Now, let’s see some of them. Avignon is a town situated in the Rhone Valley. The city has historical sights such as the Palace of the Popes, the Saint-Benezet bridge, dozens of churches and chapels. It has been Europe’s cultural centre in 2000. It is a great wine producer area. Lyon is also situated in the Rhone Valley. The city is famous for its crooked, narrow streets, for the long shores and the silk weavers' workshops of the Croix-Rousse hill. When night comes many buildings and monuments get floodlit. Toulouse is a city in Southern France. You can visit Saint-Sernin Basilica, palaces, museum such as Musée des Augustins or Les Abattoirs. It connects Canal de Garronne with Canal du Midi, so the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea. The city of Bordeaux is very famous for its wines and its monumental sights. Bordeaux has many cafés, markets, shops for tourists who would like to spend their money and harbors, boardwalks, voyages for those who would like to have a rest or relax. Nantes is situated in the Loire Valley, but has geological features from Bretagne as well. The land is famous for the muscat. There are many sights in Nantes such as Château des ducs de Bretagne, Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, basilicas and churches, historical sights, museums and beautiful parks. Saint-Pierre’s Cathedral is actually located in the French speaking city of Geneva. Paris, the capital of France is home to the Arc of Triumph which was built in 1806 to commemorate the French military led by Napoleon, the famously small leader of the French Empire. Now, the Notre Dame is a gothic cathedral located in the exact centre of Paris. It is famous for its sculptures and rose-windows but took nearly two hundred years to finish it. The Eiffel Tower got its name from its designer Gustave Eiffel and was built for 1889’s World Fair. It is the best-known symbol of the metropolis. The Louvre may be the most famous museum in Europe. It has permanent exhibitions and here you can look at the original Mona Lisa.
