Thy Kingdom Come, Jesus taught us to pray. This is what this whole series is about. I'm honoured to have been invited by the archbishop, to be a part of this whole series on prayer, and this prayer Thy Kingdom Come is our heartbeat here at The Simple Way. I remember one of my neighbours, years ago she gave the best vision for what we're doing, she said, 'I get it, I get it.' I said 'What? She said, 'What we're trying to do is, we're trying to bring the vision of the garden of Eden to North Philadelphia. I thought, 'That's it. We are trying to bring God's dream of earth as it is in heaven and we're trying to make it real, right here on Potter Street, right here in our neighbourhood.' And I think of prayer – I grew up down south in the Bible Belt, and sometimes prayer was a place to hide. You know we'd say, 'I'll pray for you,' because we couldn't think of what else to do, and I think that's what most of the politicians in our country are doing right now. After every mass shooting everybody says, 'Our prayers go out to the victims,' but gun violence victims need more than prayers. Right now, they need action. And prayer can't just be a place where we hide. Sometimes people say, 'All we can do is pray,' and they're wrong, we can pray, we must pray but we can do all sorts of other things to change this world from what it is to what God wants it to be. When I think about prayer too I'm reminded of one of my friends' kids, who was going to pray, and he said, 'Does anybody want anything?' It was kind of like he was making a list, like a waiter in a restaurant or something. And as I grew up, you know, we always brought our prayer requests to God and I think that's a part of prayer, is God wants to know the longings of our hearts. But I began to realise prayer is not just us trying to get God to do what we want God to do, but it's very much about us getting ourselves to do what God wants us to do, and to become who God wants us to become. I learned a lot about prayer in India where I had the opportunity to work with Mother Teresa and the sisters there. And every morning we'd get up for prayer at around five o'clock in the morning and we would kneel before the cross. But every prayer would be about Jesus filling us with himself. One of the prayers we'd pray was, 'Jesus, may every person I come in contact with feel your love in my soul, may I leave your fragrance off everywhere I go. Beautiful, this idea that what we're doing with God is, we're becoming more like God; as we pray, we're praying that there would be less of us and more of God; more of God's love in us, so that we can say, I no longer live but Jesus lives in me, so prayer is becoming like our God, and so it's all about getting up off our knees and seeking the kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. So I think of some of these huge problems in our world and I think, we may go to God and say, 'God, why didn't you do something about all the starving children in the world?' And we may hear God say, 'I did do something. I made you.' Because our faith is not just a ticket into heaven and a license to ignore the world around us. Our faith is about bringing God's dream on earth. So let us pray, Thy Kingdom Come, and then let us seek first the Kingdom of God, on earth as it is in heaven.
