Let us rise for the reading of this morning's Sermon text recorded for us in the 2nd Letter to the Corinthians, where we read from Chapter 4 beginning with Verse 3: AND EVEN IF OUR GOSPEL IS VEILED, IT IS VEILED TO THOSE WHO ARE PERISHING. THE GOD OF THIS AGE HAS BLINDED THE MINDS OF UNBELIEVERS, SO THAT THEY CANNOT SEE THE LIGHT OF THE GOSPEL OF THE GLORY OF CHRIST, WHO IS THE IMAGE OF GOD. FOR WE DO NOT PREACH OURSELVES, BUT JESUS CHRIST AS LORD, AND OURSELVES AS YOUR SERVANTS FOR JESUS' SAKE. FOR GOD WHO SAID, "LET LIGHT SHINE OUT OF DARKNESS," MADE HIS LIGHT SHINE IN OUR HEARTS TO GIVE US THE LIGHT OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE GLORY OF GOD IN THE FACE OF CHRIST. This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray: Glorious and gracious God, may the words of my mouth and the meditation of each of our hearts, be acceptable in your sight, our only source of hope and glory. Amen. Sermon text taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION, 1978, by the New York International Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers. Lately Jo and I have been watching old Charlie Chan movies. The black and white ones that were considered "B" movies in their day. They're probably not the greatest movies on the face of the earth, but there's always this point in those old mystery novels. Or even in the Scooby-Do shows, where they have the person that is the culprit. And they reach over and grab the mask and pull it off ... to reveal who the murderer is. Who the bad guy is. And it's always someone that no one expected. Kind of interesting that in those stories, the wicked are revealed for what they are. Really the exact opposite of what we celebrate ... today. That we celebrate the Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ who when He came into this world, took on human flesh. He veiled Himself in our humanity. He was born of a virgin. Grew up as any other child, looking and appearing as any other man. And as He went through the world of His time, teaching and preaching and proclaiming who He was, He appeared to them ... as a man. And shortly before ... His transfiguration ... shortly before ... all the events of Holy Week, His transfiguration occurred. He took with Him, Peter, James and John, up on the mountain. And there He took off the veil of His humanity, and His divinity was revealed. He stood there speaking with Elijah ... and with Moses. And the disciples were astonished at what they saw. They were afraid. They were terrified, as that crowd enveloped them. And they heard once again the voice of God the Father saying: This is My Son, recalling those same words at Jesus' baptism that thundered from the heavens. God the Father said: This is My Son, the One I have chosen. He revealed to those disciples ... Who He was. It was to be for them knowledge that would equip them for the days that would come ahead. Knowledge that they would have for the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. For that last Passover Meal together. For the Crucifixion. And the Resurrection. But the knowledge was for them to be empowerment. To strengthen their spirit. To keep them focused on Christ and who He was. And the Apostle Paul wrote that same thing to the church in Corinth. The knowledge that they had of Jesus Christ was knowledge for them for life. It revealed and showed them the glory of God and showed them the Light of the world and it reminded them that in this world, they were going to be different. The Apostle makes it very clear that those outside of faith, do not understand the Gospel. They CAN'T understand the Gospel. They DO NOT see Jesus as the glory of God. The exact representation of WHO God is and WHAT He is. Why through faith we realize and understand that everything that Jesus did in this earth was a reflection of God the Father. Even the disciples when they came to Him and said: Jesus, when are You going to show us the Father? He reminded them that ... If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father. I have come from Him. I am the One and Only sent from heaven TO THIS WORLD. To live the perfect life that God demands. To show what an understanding is of the Law ... and keeping it perfectly in each and every aspect. Jesus always proclaimed who He was, the Messiah of God. The One chosen to be the Deliverer. He showed Himself so many times in all of the miracles that are recorded for us. From the first one at the wedding of Cana, to the rising of Lazarus from the dead. THERE Jesus reflected and WAS the GLORY of God. And that is the KNOWLEDGE that we have. That is the STRENGTH that we have in this world; the POWER that is ours in knowing that Jesus was the exact representation of God. He IS the Son of God. He is the ONE that the Father has chosen to accomplish salvation. To deliver people from the bondage of sin, and eternal damnation. And to give to them the righteousness of Christ and eternal life. And THAT is the knowledge that comes to us. And we remind ourselves it shouldn't surprise us this morning that the world doesn't agree with us. The world is NEVER going to agree with us outside of faith! It is ALWAYS going to fight against God. It is always going to diminish His Word. It is always going to look at Jesus as something less than what He was and to do everything to discredit Him. And all we can do is present to them the truth. Present to them what Scripture says and let the Holy Spirit accomplish His will ... as He has done with us ... by BRINGING us to faith, and KEEPING us in that faith as we grow in that knowledge that Jesus IS the glory of God and we, also, are that glory of God through faith in Him. He came as the One who was the Light of the world. The One who came, out of darkness, into darkness for the forgiveness of people's sins. Because sin is SO condemning. It reminds us of what we are and what we will never be. And that there is a God who punishes. Think of when Moses brought ... those commandments down from Mt. Sinai to God's people. It was God's will for them. Moses didn't realize though that in speaking with God, he was reflecting that radiance and that holiness of God and when he came down from the mountain the people were terrified. They were scared, even of that reflection of God's glory. What a reminder when we are confronted with God that we fall down before Him wanting our sins to be forgiven. Realizing exactly what we're made of. And knowing that we can only plead the blood of Jesus Christ to take away God's wrath from us. And that is the knowledge that we have in this life. In knowing Christ, we know that our sins have been forgiven. That we stand as the children of God in those robes of Christ's righteousness. We await and long for that day, when God will call us out of this world of sin where we will be completely and totally redeemed forever to be in His presence and see Him face-to-face. Face-to-face without fear. Without terror, but with glory. And love ... shining in our hearts. And praises flowing from our lips, because the Lord came and He has shown into the darkness of our lives and given us faith. And He says to us: You are now My children. Now YOU are the light of the world. You are the ones who are to let that light that is within you shine ... from the knowledge that you have. The knowledge that you have been given. That knowledge that increases as you grow in your faith, as you mature, and you continue to study God's Word. That light will continue to shine in various ways. But we're to be aware of that. We're not to hide that light. We're not to be ashamed of that light. But we're to put it out there for the world to see. We're to put ourselves out there as walking advertisements for the glory of God. What it means to be a child of God and to show that God truly loves us dearly. He has given us His Son and we give back to Him glory and honor and praise and thanks that He has come to us and revealed Himself to us. That He has made Himself known. That He has removed that veil and we know that Jesus IS the Savior. We understand that His Father is a God who punishes but that punishment was placed on His Son so that you and I could have life ... eternal life. That in this world we can have peace in the forgiveness of sins. Calm outside of the chaos of the world. That is the knowledge that we have. Let us use that knowledge. Let it not stay tucked up in our own heads hidden away for our own benefit, but let our light shine, so that others may know that Jesus is truly Lord of all. Amen. Let us rise. Now may the peace of God which goes beyond all of our understanding, keep your hearts and your minds, and especially your lives in the one true faith until life everlasting. Amen.
